Cross Country Holds First Workout of the Season at the Temple Sports Complex

8.24.16 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country

Under the bright stadium lights Tuesday night, Temple men's and women's cross country held its first workout of the 2016 season at the new Temple Sports Complex.

"The new complex is beautiful," says junior Katie Pinson as she shares her excitement for the season. "At our old track, it was always a shared space. There were always other people hanging around, which is a good thing, but it is really nice that this is a place that we can now call our own for three hours a day. There's a sense of pride that comes with that."

Although the cross country teams did not use the old track very often, head coach, James Snyder, predicts that the new track and facility will have a great impact on the coming season.

"New is always a good thing. The old surface was like running on concrete, which isn't great for our athletes. In the past I have never had the cross country team do much work on the track because I was fearful of what the surface was like," Snyder explains. "Now, I think we will utilize the track a lot more with the distance runners for sure. The ability to have a place to train with an athletic training room and something as simple as having a bathroom here, which we didn't have on the old track, is a great thing."

Cross country and Coach Snyder are excited about all of the positives that come with the Temple Sports Complex. Senior Megan Schneider believes that the new space will even give the teams the opportunity to get to know the other teams that share the complex.

"When we were at the old track, because lacrosse and field hockey practiced higher up on the next field over, we never really saw them," Schneider explains. "This will definitely give us an opportunity to meet the members of the soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse teams." Pinson and Schneider also attribute their ability to perform better in workouts without distractions to location of the new track.

Overall, the first experience for both men's and women's cross country went well in Coach Snyder's eyes. "I'm content," he states. "The first workout was solid. I was able to gauge what works well and where we will need to improve over the course of the season. Tonight, I had ten members of the men's team finish a full 30 minutes of our session which was phenomenal considering I usually envision about half that number prior to getting on the track. This shows me that the younger guys are showing up ready to go."

This season he's expecting to see leaders emerge in sophomore's John Condly and Ben Evans as well as incoming graduate student Marc Steinsberger from Germany, whose international experience and maturity will add some depth and a strong voice to the squad. On the women's side, Snyder expects good things from Pinson and sophomore Katie Leisher.

Men's and women's cross country are gearing up for the first meet of the season, the Duquesne Duals, on Sept. 3.
