Men's Soccer Shuts Out Manhattan 3-0 in 2016 Season Opener
8.26.16 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – In front of a capacity crowd at the Temple Sports Complex, Temple men's soccer kicked off its season with a dominating 3-0 victory over the Manhattan Jaspers on Friday evening. Three different Owls were able to find the back of the net in the first half to secure the victory.
"Today was tremendous," said head coach David MacWilliams. "I've been here for 16 years and I think this is really the first time we can say we played at a real home game in front of the student body. We're all ecstatic."
Just four minutes into the game captain Matt Mahoney served a ball to Hermann Doerner from the right side that Doerner booted in from just outside the box.
Doerner helped set up a second Temple goal quickly during the eighth minute. Stefan Mueller grabbed a pass from Doerner on the left side, served it in quickly to Joonas Jokinen who tapped in the team's second goal.
The Owls' third goal came off a penalty kick taken by Jorge Gomez Sanchez in the 27th minute. Following a foul drawn in the box by Doerner, Gomez Sanchez fired one past Jaspers' goalkeeper Tomas Espinal to secure the win.
"The guys have been pumped," said MacWilliams. "They know if you don't get on the board quickly it changes the complex of the game. They responded and did great."
Manhattan's Espinal faced an aggressive Owl offense, making three impressive saves including a close one-on-one with the Owls' Trevor Babin.
Despite the scoreless second half, the Owls led the Jaspers in second-half shots 8-2. Temple goalkeeper Alex Cagle posted saves on both of the Jaspers' shots on target.
MacWilliams dug deep into his bench throughout the game. Freshmen Albert Moreno, Zach Brown, Lukas Fernandes, and Nick Sarver all got their first minutes as Owls on opening night.
"I think we have a lot of depth," said MacWilliams. "I'm confident I can put some of those guys in at any point and have them get some experience under their belts."
The Owls are back at home on Sunday afternoon to take on the Saint Joseph's Hawks. Sunday's match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
