PHILADELPHIA – Temple men's soccer is set to kick off its 2016 campaign with a game-filled weekend at the brand new Temple Sports Complex. The Owls will first host Manhattan College on Friday, Aug. 26 at 4 followed by a Sunday afternoon game against Saint Joseph's starting at 2 p.m.
Temple's home opener will also be Student Appreciation Night as a part of Welcome Week for the University's new and returning students.
The Owls are coming off a successful pair of preseason exhibition matches, going 2-0 in scrimmages against Lafayette and Monmouth. Across both matches, the Owls posted three goals from three different Owls and allowed only one goal. Senior Matt Mahoney made a large impact for the Owls, scoring or assisting in all three Temple goals.
Mahoney is joined by a seasoned group of seniors looking to lead the team to a strong opening weekend. The 2015 team points leader, Jorge Gomez Sanchez, will be a key returner and was selected to the American Athletic Conference Preseason All-Conference Team.
Also returning with a strong season under his belt is redshirt junior, Alex Cagle. After stepping into the starting goalkeeper role in 2015, Cagle helped the team to five shutouts and was awarded the American Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award for his work both on and off the field.
The Matchups…
Friday's matchup will be the third all-time meeting between the Owls and the Jaspers of Manhattan College. Last year, Temple opened up its season on the road at Manhattan where the Owls grabbed a 1-0 victory in overtime.
The Jaspers are coming off a 4-11-2 season in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference under head coach Jorden Scott. The team was picked ninth in the MAAC Preseason Poll and grabbed an exhibition win over Bucknell before preseason concluded.
Sunday's matchup will feature a Philadelphia Soccer Six Rival in the Saint Joseph's Hawks. The Hawks last saw the Owls in 2013 when Saint Joseph's was able to come away with a 1-0 victory. In 2015, the team finished with a 4-12-2 record and has welcomed eight newcomers for the upcoming season.
History is rich between the two local programs. The teams have met a total of 57 times since their first match in 1958. Temple leads the all-time series which stands at 36-14-7.
