Men's Soccer to Host Pitt and Northeastern
9.1.16 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – Entering the second weekend of the season, Temple men's soccer looks to add to its 2-0 start with two more home games beginning Friday afternoon. The Owls will first take on the Pittsburgh Panthers in a 3 p.m. matchup on Friday and will return to the Temple Sports Complex Sunday to face Northeastern at noon.
After logging two shutouts in the opening weekend, the American Athletic Conference recognized three Owls in the first set of weekly conference awards. Goalkeeper Alex Cagle was named Goalkeeper of the Week after logging three saves on his way to a 2-0 start. Joonas Jokinen and Carlos Moros Gracia were both named to the weekly honor roll for their contributions.
Jokinen was also named Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week after posting a pair of goals in the first weekend. Fellow forward Jorge Gomez Sanchez also scored two goals last weekend, along with one assist to stand as the team leader with five points through two games.
As a team, the Owls currently rank fifth in the NSCAA East Regional Poll. No. 14/11 UConn sits at the top of the poll with Vermont, UMass-Lowell and USF ranking above Temple. The Owls do sit one spot above conference powerhouse #25/NR SMU who opened its 2016 campaign with a 2-1 loss against Michigan State.
The Matchups…
Friday's match against Pittsburgh will be the Owls' first meeting with the Panthers since 1979. That match ended in a 0-0 tie. Overall, the Owls lead the all-time series 8-3-1.
The Panthers travel to Philadelphia following their season opener against Detroit. Despite posting 17 shots through 110 minutes of play, the Panthers ended their season opener in a 0-0 draw. Their second scheduled match against Howard was postponed due to inclement weather.
Jay Vidovich has begun his first year at the helm for Pittsburgh. Previoiusly, the well-known ACC coach led Wake Forest to an NCAA Championship in 2007.
Sunday's match features the Northeastern Huskies and will mark the second all-time meeting between the two teams. The Owls first met the Huskies last season when they finished the match in a 1-1 draw.
The Huskies also welcome a first-year head coach in Chris Gbandi. Gbandi previously played at UConn and has spent the past few years as the associate head coach at Dartmouth. In 2014 he was named the NSCAA East Regional Coach of the Year after leading the Big Green to their first NCAA appearance in three years.
The Huskies opened the season with a 2-1 loss against UMass-Lowell and will have faced Saint Joseph's prior to Sunday's matchup.
Both games will be streamed live on OwlsTV, here.
