News and Notes Following Temple's 38-0 victory over Stony Brook…
Temple posted a shutout for the second time in the Matt Rhule era and the first time since 9/20/14 when the Owls defeated Delaware State 59-0.
In the last two games against FCS opponents, Temple has posted a 97-0 cumulative score.
Temple's defense held Stony Brook to 0-of-13 on third down conversions.
Temple's defense surrendered just 49 rushing yards and 84 passing yards. It was the first time they held an opponent under 100-yards in both categories since defeating UCF, 30-16, on 10/17/15 (67 rushing, 67 passing).
After allowing just 15 yards passing vs. Army a week ago and just 84 against Stony Brook, Temple's pass defense has allowed only 99 yards on the season.
Junior punter Alex Starzyk laid the foundation for Temple's 38-0 shutout of Stony Brook with a 53-yard punt that pinned the Seawolves on their 1-yard line. His only other first half punt was downed at the 3YL. Stony Brook ran just two plays from scrimmage on Temple's side of the field the entire first half. For the day, Starzyk finished with four punts for a 47.5-yard average.
QB Phillip Walker threw three touchdown passes. It was the 16th multiple TD game of his career and the fifth time he threw for three-or-more (all four other games were 4-TD performances).
Redshirt sophomore WR Brodrick Yancy hauled in a 15-yard TD pass for the first score of his career.
After suffering an injury a week ago, redshirt junior WR Keith Kirkwood went through concussion protocol that kept him out of practice until Thursday. All he did was lead the team with 4 catches for 54 yards and his first career two-touchdown game.
Making his college debut, true freshman DB Benny Walls led the Owls with five tackles (four solos) and his first career interception. That pick was made in the end zone with just 0:48 remaining in the 4th quarter, preserving Temple's 38-0 shutout.
Overall, 28 different players made a tackle. Nine defensive players made the first tackles of their careers.
All three of the Owls interceptions were made by safeties. Walls and sophomore Delvon Randall made their first career picks, while junior Sean Chandler, a converted corner, made the sixth interception of his career. He tied Kevin Kroboth for 17th on the school's all-time list and, with one more, can move into a tie for 12th (among those tied for 12th are Tyler Matakevich, Tavon Young and Todd Bowles – all NFL players).
Redshirt freshman DL Dana Levine collected his first career sack in the 4th quarter.
Three WRs seeing their first offensive action helped move the ball in the rushing game. Isaiah Wright (7-42), Cortrelle Simpson (2-40) and Travon Williams (1-1) all took handoffs to advance the ball downfield. Williams took the opening kickoff, Temple's only one of the day, 26 yards.
Redshirt sophomore TE Chris Myarick, redshirt senior TE Jake O'Donnell, redshirt freshman LB Chapelle Russell, and redshirt junior DT Jullian Taylor all made their first career starts.
The following players made their collegiate debut: QB Logan Marchi, WR Isaiah Wright, DL Jeromy Reichner, OL Dan Drewes, WR Travon Williams, DB Linwood Crump, DB Benny Walls, LB Jared Folks, LB Mike DiFrancesco, LB Daishaun Grimes, DL Dana Levine, OL Matt Hennessy, OL Benson Israel, DL Karamo Dioubate, WR Freddie Johnson, WR Randle Jones, TE Patrick Anderson, and DL Deandre Kelly.
