Men's Soccer Drops Overtime Thriller at Drexel, 3-2
9.13.16 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – A competitive overtime matchup ended in a loss for Temple men's soccer as they fell to city-rival Drexel 3-2. The back-and-forth match saw two goals from Jorge Gomez Sanchez. With the result, the Owls fall to 4-2-0 on their 2016 season.
Gomez Sanchez got the Owls up to an early 1-0 lead with a straight shot fed from Joonas Jokinen following a clean serve in by Stefan Mueller.
Mark Grasela gave the Owls a huge chance to move up to 2-0 in the first 20 minutes with an on-target bicycle kick that just lifted over the crossbar.
Quickly after, the Dragons answered with a strong charge that tied the game up with a goal per team in the 17th minute.
With less than 20 minutes remaining in the first half, the Dragons netted a second goal off the foot of Ilai Shvika following a corner kick.
A series of competitive possession changes finally broke with nine minutes remaining in the first half. Jokinen linked up with Gomez Sanchez for the second time to tie the game again at 2-2.
As the second half opened, pressure switched between both teams with strong offensive attacks on both ends. Shots from Hermann Doerner and Mueller kicked off momentum for the Owls but were answered with a pair of back-to-back corners from Drexel.
Defending the set pieces well, the Owls were able to get out of their defensive end and eventually force Dragons' goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach to make two impressive saves with four minutes remaining in regulation.
The second period closed with Drexel posting seven shots to Temple's five and no goals from either team.
Six minutes into the first overtime period, Drexel's Colin McGlynn connected with Carlos Cuevas to end the game with a score of 3-2.
The Owls return home this weekend for a 2:00 p.m. matchup against the Fairfield Stags. Saturday's match will also be an International Celebration night.
