Temple Hosts Stony Brook in First Football Matchup Between the Two Schools
9.5.16 | Football
PHILADELPHIA -Â Temple football will host its second home game of the season as the Owls take on Stony Brook at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Lincoln Financial Field. The last time Temple played an FCS school was when it hosted Delaware State on Sept., 20, 2014. The Owls won the game 59-0, marking the first shutout for Matt Rhule as Temple's head coach. Quarterback Phillip Walker, who became the school's all-time leader in passing yards (7,542), looks to bounce back from a tough loss last week to Army against a Stony Brook team that only allowed 114 passing yards in its win over North Dakota. Â
With all-conference RB Jahad Thomas likely out for a second straight week, the Owls will rely heavily on sophomore Ryquell Armstead, who rushed for a career-high 77 yards and a touchdown last week. Temple's defense hopes to bounce back against a Stony Brook offense led by quarterback Joe Carbone. The Seawolves are coached by Chuck Priore, who is now in his 11th season and has a 63-52 record with the program. The game between Temple and Stony Brook is set to air on ESPN3 and 97.5 The Fanatic, Temple football's flagship radio station.
LAST WEEK
Temple suffered a tough opening week loss at the hands of Army, 28-13. The game saw quarterback Phillip Walker become the all-time passing yards leader at Temple. The senior struggled during the game though, as he threw for 168 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions. Running back Ryquell Armstead did a nice job replacing injured senior Jahad Thomas, as he ran for a career-high 77 yards and a touchdown. The defense had a tough time stopping the Army triple-option offense as they let up 329 yards on the ground. The game did see a number of individuals get career-highs in tackles including redshirt senior linebacker Avery Williams (12), senior defensive tackle Averee Robinson (8) and redshirt junior cornerback Artrel Foster (6). Defensive lineman Sharif Finch also blocked his fifth punt, which makes him the leader among active NCAA players. The Owls are now 7-5 all-time vs. the Black Knights.
LAST TIME
This will be the first matchup between Temple and Stony Brook.
UP NEXT
After Stony Brook, Temple will travel to Happy Valley for its first road game of the year to play in-state rival Penn State. The Owls then return the following two weeks to take on Charlotte (Sept. 24) for Homecoming, and open up conference play the following week against SMU (Oct. 1).
