PHILADELPHIA - The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced the ECAC Football Teams of the Year and for the second straight year, Temple University was named the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision Team of the Year. The Owls also had six ECAC first-team Ā all-star selections: DB Sean Chandler, OL Dion Dawkins, DL Praise Martin-Oguike, DL Haason Reddick, RB Jahad Thomas, and LB Avery Williams. All will be honored at the Eastern College Football Awards Banquet on February, 23, 2017, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Temple finished the year with a 10-4 overall record, and a 7-1 conference ledger. The outstanding season was capped off by a win in the American Athletic Conference Championship game, 34-10, over Navy, which was the Owls' first conference title since 1967. The team's remarkable accomplishments during the 2016 season also included reaching back-to-back 10 win seasons for the first time in school history and winning its second straight American East title. The team also cracked the Top 25 for a second consecutive year, finishing the season ranked No. 24 in the College Football Playoff.

The Owls had a lot of individual success in 2016 as the six first team all-star selections were tied for most among any team in the ECAC. Those six, and three more players – K Aaron Boumerhi, LB Stephaun Marshall, TE Colin Thompson - Ā were All-American Athletic Conference honorees. Dawkins and Reddick were first team all-conference selections. Five players were recognized from Ā a defense that finished the year ranked third nationally in yards per game (282.5), third in pass defense (152.1)Ā  11th in scoring defense (18.4), 19th in sacks (37), 21st in third down defense (34.7), and Ā 25th in rushing defense (130.1). Ā The offense should not be overlooked as the 2016 unit set school records in scoring (453 points) and most yards in a season (5,790).

This the third time Temple has won the award, previously collecting the hardware following the 1979 and 2015 seasons. The Owls beat out Penn State and Wisconsin, who both finished ranked top ten nationally at the end of the season.
