Volleyball Plays a Pair Against UConn

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team will close out the 2017 regular season with a pair of matches against UConn. The Owls will play their final home match of the season on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. before playing at UConn on Friday at 1:00 p.m.

THE OWLS
> Temple is 17-9 overall with a 13-5 record in conference play.
> The Owls recorded a split in their last series, falling 3-0 against UCF on Friday, but winning 3-1 against USF on Sunday.
> Temple is in third place in The American, one game back of second-place SMU.

SENIOR DAY
> On Wednesday, the Owls will honor their five person class of 2018.
> Seniors Irem Asci, Kyra Coundourides, Dara Peric, Izzy Rapacz, and Janine Simmons will be honored following the match.

SCOUTING TEMPLE
> Senior Izzy Rapacz leads the team with 3.54 kills per set, also averaging 2.46 digs and 1.09 blocks per set.
> Redshirt Freshman Dana Westfield contributes 2.77 kills per frame.
> Junior Iva Deak (2.02 kills/set) and senior Janine Simmons (1.66 kills/set) and shore up the middle for the Owls.
> Simmons leads the team with 1.12 blocks per set.
> Coundourides averages 10.30 assists per set, with that number rising to 11.46 in conference play.
> Junior Mia Heirakuji tops the Owls' defense with 3.87 digs per set. 
> Freshman Katerina Papazoglou adds 1.72 kills and 1.94 digs per set.
> Senior Dara Peric also contributes all around with 1.47 kills per set and 2.49 digs per frame.
> As a team, the Owls hit .246, holding opponents to a .199 attack.

LAST TIME OUT: Temple 3, USF 1 (11/19/17 at Temple)
> Temple got back in the win column, with a 3-1 victory (25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23) over visiting USF on Sunday.
> Temple hit .319 in the match, holding USF to a .244 attack.
> Rapacz had a double-double with 16 kills and 21 digs.
> Westfield ended her night with 15 kills and six digs.
> Deak tied her career best with 14 kills, hittng a massive .522.
> Junior Carla Guennewig racked up 10 kills and a team-best five blocks.
> Junior Hannah Vandegrift finished with 39 assists, while Coundourides dished out 19.

SCOUTING UCONN
> UConn is 11-19 overal with a 4-14 record in conference play.
> The Huskies have lost four straight matches, all close 3-1 losses, except their last match - a 3-2 loss against UCF.
> Kayla Williams leads UConn with 3.88 kills per set, also averaging 2.84 digs per frame.
> Kenya Cason adds 2.61 kils per set, while Iman McGary chips in with 2.38 kills per frame.
> Genna Florig leads the Huskies with 87 total blocks, while Tosin Adeniyi adds 68.
> Emma Turner is the primary setter, racking up 9.84 assists per frame.
> Kennedy Arundel leads the Huskies' defense to the tune of 3.60 digs per set.

TEMPLE VS. UCONN
> Temple leads the all-time series with UConn, 9-4. 
> The Owls have won three straight against the Huskies, including sweeping the season series last year.
> Temple and UConn first met in 1983, but have only played 13 matches against each other, eight coming in American Athletic Conference play.

LAST TIME THEY MET
> The Temple volleyball team hit a 2016 season-best .346 in a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-22, 25-19) over UConn on October 26, 2016
> Six Temple players hit over .300 as Temple hit .385 or better as a team in two of three sets. 
> Junior Irem Asci racked up match-best totals of 16 kills and 14 digs for a double-double. 
> Rapacz added nine kills, while senior Tyler Davis had six. 
> Coundourides ran the offense to the tune of 39 assists, also adding seven digs, three kills, and two aces. 
> For UConn, Kayla Wiliams had 11 kills and nine digs. 

WHAT'S NEXT
> Temple hopes to qualify for post-season play.
> The NCAA selection show will air on ESPNU on Sunday at 9:00 p.m.
> The WVIC selection announcement will follow the NCAA field, later on Sunday night.
