Sharga, Boumerhi Named to Philly-SIDA Academic All-Area Team

PHILADELPHIA - With backing from 29 regional athletic programs, the Philadelphia Inquirer announced Wednesday morning the 24 honorees for the 2017 Academic All-Area Football Team, tabbing Temple redshirt senior FB Nick Sharga and sophomore K Aaron Boumerhi on the list. Annually, the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association (Philly-SIDA) compiles and votes on the region's top student-athletes, focusing on academic success with on-field contributions.
Sharga, one of three to make the team for the third-consecutive season, has served as the Owls' starting fullback since his redshirt sophomore season, and has started five games between two positions (four at fullback, one at linebacker) this year alone. The same season he took over full-time fullback duties (2015), his teammates recognized his toughness by voting him to wear a single-digit jersey - #4. As a fullback, Sharga has impacted the game primarily through his brutal hits, but has also racked up 150 career rushing yards and one touchdown. Academically, the redshirt senior has maintained a 3.79 GPA and will graduate with a degree in kinesiology this month.
Meanwhile, Boumerhi inherited full-time kicking duties midway through last season when the team's starter, Austin Jones, went down with an injury. The freshman flourished, finishing the year with American Athletic Conference second-team honors. This season, the true sophomore has continued his consistent play, racking up 70 points behind a 65.2 percent field goal percentage while knocking through a career-long 52-yarder against Villanova. On the academic side, though, Boumerhi has been particularly impressive, as he has managed a 3.74 GPA as a biochemistry major.
