Lacrosse Falls to Powerhouse No. 13 Princeton on the Road

PRINCETON, N.J. - After two games with a potent offense, Temple lacrosse was unable to find much of it in game three against one of the nation's top teams, losing 19-3 at #13 Princeton (1-0) on Saturday afternoon. All-American Olivia Hompe led the Tigers with four goals, while six others scored two goals apiece for Princeton.

"This game was a really important learning experience for us," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen, "and we need to use it to get after things for next week. Princeton is a really strong team and they played at a speed we hadn't seen yet in practice or in the teams we've played against, and I think that experience will go long way for us. We did a decent job competing for draw controls and ground balls, and the score doesn't show it but I think our defense played a lot better than it had been. I feel good about what we're starting to learn and do on our defensive end."

Temple (2-1) got off 22 shots including 15 on goal, but All-American and 2016 IWLCA Division I Goalkeeper of the Year Ellie DeGarmo started her season strong with 12 saves for the Tigers. The Owls had previously taken 40 shots against Monmouth and 35 against Rutgers.

"Our offense was dealing with the pace of the game and the extra pressure," said Rosen, "and I think we got a little rattled early. Against a top goalie in the country you have to put more shots on goal than we did today."

The Owls allowed two early goals by Princeton, both by Hompe, before senior Brenda McDermott got Temple on the board at 24:48 of the first half. From there it was nearly all Tigers the rest of the way, as Hompe scored her third and then seven other players scored for Princeton in a 9-1 run.

Only the first career goal for Temple freshman Olivia Thompson broke up the Tigers' scored, as she made it a 9-2 game with 8:18 left in the first half thanks to an assist from senior Carly Demato.

Princeton scored two more before the break, sending Temple into halftime down 11-2. The Tigers had a strong lead in draw controls early on, but Glassford racked up four by halftime and the Owls finished the half down just 8-6 in total draw controls.

The run continued for most of the second half for Princeton, as the Tigers scored eight more goals before Temple got its third.

After Princeton's 19th goal, junior Nicole Latgis controlled the draw for Temple and fellow junior Kira Gensler scored her first goal of the season with 2:21 remaining.

Although the Owls' defense struggled to contain the Tigers, a bright spot for Temple was the play of freshman defender Kara Nakrasius whose four ground balls and five caused turnovers were both game highs.

Temple will play even closer to home in its next game, a 3 p.m. contest at city rival Saint Joseph's on Wednesday, Feb. 22.
