#23/20 Women's Basketball Wins Big on Senior Day

PHILADELPHIA – The #23/20 Temple women's basketball team sent its seniors off in style, with a wire-to-wire 88-64 win over visiting Cincinnati on Saturday afternoon at McGonigle Hall. The Senior Day victory improved the Owls to 22-6 overall, 12-3 in conference play, while Cincinnati falls to 16-12, 7-8.

Temple set the tone early in the game, not allowing the Bearcats a field goal in the first quarter, as the Owls jumped out to a 23-2 lead. Though Cincinnati went an on an 8-2 run to open the second quarter, Temple's advantage didn't fall below 15 points the rest of the way. The Owls out-shot the Bearcats, 47.8% to 41.1% and held a 41-27 edge on the glass.

Individually, junior Tanaya Atkinson notched her ninth double-double of the season in spectacular fashion – scoring a career-best 30 points and adding a game-high 13 rebounds. Senior Feyonda Fitzgerald also rang up a double-double with 18 points and 11 assists. Junior Alliya Butts stuffed her stat line with 23 points, six assists, and three steals, while senior Safiya Martin had six points and four rebounds. Rounding out the box score for Temple, junior Khadijah Berger had five points, senior Monasia Bolduc had five rebounds, and senior Ruth Sherrill had three boards and a block.

Temple allowed just a pair of Shanice Johnson free throws in their best defensive quarter of the season. The Owls shot 42.9% (9-21) from the field, holding Cincinnati to 0% (0-12), en route to a 23-2 advantage.

The Bearcats used an 8-2 surge to get the Temple lead down to 15 points, 27-12, with 7:48 on the clock. From there, Temple out-scored Cincinnati, 20-13, the rest of the way, to increase the advantage to 22 at the break (47-25).

Butts led all scorers with 21 points at the break, as the junior drained five from long-range. Atkinson nearly picked up her double-double in the first 20 minutes, with 17 points and seven rebounds at the break. Cincinnati's Sam Rodgers led the Bearcats with seven first-half points.

The Bearcats got one point back in the third quarter, out-scoring Temple, 21-20, but the Owls' advantage never dipped below 17 points.

In the fourth, Temple shot a massive 69.2%, pushing the lead to 30 before emptying the bench.

Cincinnati's Johnson led the Bearcats with 15 points and six rebounds, while Rodgers finished with 13 points and Ana Owens had eight points and four assists.

Temple has short rest, as the Owls head to Orlando tomorrow to play a Monday game at UCF at 7:00 p.m.
