Lacrosse Hosts Marquette on Saturday in BIG EAST Home Opener

3.23.17 | Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA - The BIG EAST Conference home opener for Temple lacrosse is on Saturday, March 25 at 1 p.m. as the Owls (7-2, 0-1) host Marquette (3-6, 1-0). Temple is a perfect 4-0 at Howarth Field so far this season.

The Owls had a five-game win streak snapped at No. 14 Denver in the league opener on March 19, falling 14-6 to the Pioneers. Prior to that, Temple finished its non-conference season at 7-1, the best record in the BIG EAST.

Temple was picked to finish fifth among the 10 BIG EAST teams, and will need to better that pick by at least one to advance to the conference tournament at Villanova in early May.

Leading Temple in scoring so far this season are sophomore Amber Lambeth and senior Brenda McDermott with 16 goals each. Lambeth, who went scoreless in her freshman year, had two four-goal efforts in the opening two games which were both wins for the Owls. McDermott, named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team and named BIG EAST Attacker of the Week on Feb. 14, leads Temple in assists with 19 which ranks 12th in NCAA Division I.

Two-time BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week already this season, senior Morgan Glassford, has a team-best 38 draw controls and ranks fourth in the league with 4.75 draws per game. Glassford has recorded 139 career draw controls to rank third all-time at Temple, needing just three more to tie for second and 17 more to tie for first.

Freshman goalkeeper Maryn Lowell has played five complete games and made a career-high 11 saves in helping the Owls defeat Lafayette, 18-12 on Feb. 25. Lowell is 5-1 in the cage so far this season.

The Golden Eagles are just 3-6 overall, but they've had an extremely challenging schedule with five of their losses coming against teams ranked in the Top 20. Marquette won its BIG EAST opener at Cincinnati on March 19, 16-10, snapping a three-game losing streak. The Golden Eagles lost by just two goals to #20 Johns Hopkins, and by just a single goal to #18 Louisville in their season opener.

Senior attacker Julianna Shearer leads Marquette with 27 goals this season (third in the BIG EAST), while redshirt senior attacker Claire Costanza has recorded a team-best 14 assists. Defensively, senior Fran Meyer is the team leader in ground balls (21) and caused turnovers (21).

Temple and Marquette are meeting for the third time since the Owls joined the BIG EAST in 2014, with the Owls leading the series 2-1. Temple won that first year, 11-7 in Milwaukee, and won again by the same score in Philadelphia in 2015. Last season, the Golden Eagles got the best of the Owls by a score of 12-10 on their home field.
