ITHACA, N.Y. – Temple men's golf opened its fall season Saturday in strong fashion at the Cornell Invitational. The Owls shot a five-over 573 at the 6,904, par-71 Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University and sit in third place among the 16-team field, two shots behind Yale (571) and one back of Dartmouth (572).
Keys to the Tournament
> Redshirt junior John Barone leads the Owls and is tied for second overall among the 90-man field. Barone had seven birdies over the two rounds, carding identical 70s in the morning and afternoon.
> Junior Trey Wren had five birdies in shooting a one-over 141 on the day to sit tied for 14th.
> Playing in his first collegiate tournament, Dawson Anders looked far from a rookie, bagging two eagles in his opening round (70). He was four-over 75 in the afternoon and is tied for 20th with a three-over 145.
> Playing as an individual, sophomore Marty McGuckin shot an even-par (142) to tie for eighth overall. McGuckin, who was the hottest Owl during the summer, was three-over in his first two holes before making seven birdies and an eagle over the remaining 34.
Game Notes
> Temple finished 8th of 14 teams in last year's Cornell Invitational.
Quotable
"I am pleased with the way we played and competed today for our first day back in tournament play. I am real happy, .but hopefully tomorrow we can play a real strong mental round out there on the golf course. We will need to if we want to win." – Temple head coach Brian Quinn
