Volleyball Opens Home Slate with Sweep of BC

PHILADELPHIA -- Temple volleyball celebrated its home opener with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Boston College to kick-off the 2017 Sonesta Hotel Philadelphia Cherry and White Challenge. The Owls grabbed three close sets, 25-22, 25-20, 25-23, to move to 4-3 overall, while the Eagles fell to 2-5.
Keys to the Match
> Temple hit .279 as a team, holding Boston College to a .158 attack.
> Senior Izzy Rapacz was on fire, attacking 18 times with 11 kills and no errors to hit a massive .611.
> Temple trailed midway through each of the three sets, including rallying from a 20-15 deficit in the first frame.
> A large and loud home crowd was on hand, as Temple used an 8-1 run late in the first to take a 23-21 advantage.
> BC made it a 23-22 set, but the Owls got the final two points, including a set-winning block from Rapacz and sophomore Carla Guennewig.
> Temple took control early in set two, going up 9-4 on a kill from senior Irem Asci.
> From there, BC surged for 10 of the next 13 points, opening up a 14-12 advantage.Â
> Temple inched back ahead 20-17, and then closed things out with a 5-3 surge to end the second frame.
> Temple grabbed the first four points of the third set, but BC battled back and it was tied as late as 22-22.
> The Owls broke the final tie with kills from Rapacz, and seniors Janine Simmons and Dara Peric to close out the set and the sweep.

> Asci ended her night with a double-double of 11 points and a match-best 10 digs.
> Redshirt freshman Dana Westfield tallied nine digs and a pair of blocks.
> Senior Kyra Coundourides notched 18 assists with five digs.
> Junior Hannah Vandegrift finished with 11 assists and five digs.
> Peric tallied four kills and nine digs with three blocks.
> Guennewig had a team-best five blocks.
