No. 12 Virginia Narrowly Tops Men's Tennis 4-3

1.22.18 | Men's Tennis

Charlottesville, Va. - The shorthanded Temple men's tennis team (1-1) dropped a hard fought match to No. 12 Virginia 4-3 in Charlottesville, Va. on Sunday.

Playing without injured starter Uladzimir Dorash, the Owls fell just short as Virginia freshman Kyrolo Tsygura rallied to beat Owls freshman Mark Wallner 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in the decisive match on court five to secure the win for the Cavaliers.

"It was a great match against the defending national champions, I'm proud of the way we competed," said Temple head coach Steve Mauro. "Unfortunately we fell a little short against a great team playing without one of our starters (Dorash). Had he been able to play, I think that would've made the difference for us."

Dorash injured his shoulder in Temple's win over Morgan State and there is no timetable for his return.

Temple took the doubles point to start things off, as Alberto Caceres Casas and Thomas Sevel defeated Virginia's Ammar Alhaqbani and Matthew Lord 7-5. In the Owls other doubles victory, Juan Araoz and Wallner took down Virginia's Jefferson Dockter and Gianni Ross 6-4.

Sevel opened the singles competitions for Temple with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Lord, but the Cavaliers went on to win the next four matches to clinch their second victory of the season.

The Owls will be in action again on Friday as they host St. Francis College Brooklyn at the Legacy Tennis Center at 8:00 a.m.
