Men's Basketball Travels to SMU on Wednesday

1.9.18 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Temple men's basketball will play its second straight game on the road, traveling to SMU (12-5, 2-2) for a 9 p.m. (EST) contest on Wednesday, Jan. 10 (CBSSN / 1210 AM WPHT). The Owls (7-8, 0-4) are looking to stop a five-game skid and earn their first American Athletic Conference win.

Scouting Temple
> Temple is looking for its first American Athletic Conference win and has lost five straight, its longest losing streak since the 2013-14 season.
> The Owls suffered back-to-back close losses to Houston (76-73) and #19/20 Cincinnati (55-53) before falling 60-39 at UCF. Temple shot just 32 percent, tying its season low, and went over 10 minutes without a point in the second half.
> Freshman Nate Pierre-Louis has been a bright spot for the Owls, and is the second-leading scorer in conference games with 10.3 ppg. Pierre-Louis was Temple's leading scorer at UCF with 13 points in just 18 minutes of action.
> The Owls led for the vast majority of their game vs. Cincinnati, but the Bearcats surged in the final minutes and got a last-second long jumper from Jacob Evans for the win. Cincinnati's 55 points tied the least number of points allowed by the Owls this season, and were 26 points fewer than the Bearcats' previous average of 80.9 points per game.
> Sophomore Quinton Rose is the Owls' leading scorer with 14.5 ppg, ranking 11th in the league. Junior Shizz Alston, Jr. is close behind at 14.1 ppg (12th in the AAC), and he is tied for first among all players in the conference with a free-throw percentage of .914.
> Either Rose or Alston have led or tied for the team lead in scoring in 12 of 15 of Temple's games in 2017-18.
> Temple has started the same five players - Josh Brown, Shizz Alston, Jr., Quinton Rose, Obi Enechionyia and Ernest Aflakpui - all season.

Scouting SMU
> The Mustangs are 12-5 overall and won their first two league games before suffering back-to-back losses at Tulane and Cincinnati this past week.
> On Nov. 23, SMU upset #2/4 Arizona in the Bahamas, 66-60.
> All five starters are averaging double-digits in scoring, led by Shake Milton with 17.0 ppg. Jarrey Foster averages 14.0 ppg, Ethan Chargois at 12.1 ppg, Jimmy Whitt at 10.3 ppg and Ben Emelogu at 10.2.
> SMU leads the league with a three-point percentage of .419, and ranks second with 8.8 three-pointers made per game.
> In 2016-17, the Mustangs went 30-5 before getting upset 66-65 by USC in the NCAA First Round.

All-Time Series
> Temple and SMU are meeting for the 11th time with SMU holding a, 6-4 edge in the all-time series.
> The Mustangs swept Temple last year, winning 79-65 in Dallas on Jan. 4 and defeating the Owls 66-50 in Philadelphia on Feb. 9.
> The Owls were the first team to defeat SMU in 2015-16 after an 18-0 start for the #8 Mustangs. Temple pulled off the upset at home on Jan. 24, winning 89-80. It was the only meeting between the two teams that season.
> Prior to meeting as American opponents in 2013-14, the most recent meeting was in 1955-56 when the Owls beat the Mustangs 90-81 in the NCAA Final Four third-place game.
> The first meeting between the teams was in 1937-38, with Temple earning a 53-41 win at the Philadelphia Arena.
> Fran Dunphy faced SMU three times while at Penn, winning in 1989-90 and 1990-91 and losing once in 1995-96.
