GREENVILLE, N.C.— Temple women's soccer (6-8-1, 2-3-1 AAC) fell to the ECU Pirates (8-5-3, 3-4 AAC) 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. ECU's goal early in the second half decided the contest.
Keys to the Match
> Julia Dolan had the first scoring opportunity of the match for the Owls. Eight minutes into the first half, she directed a header on goal off an Emily Keitel corner kick, but the ECU keeper punched away the attempt.
> Natalie Druehl kept the ECU keeper on her toes in the 36th minute. Druehl fired a free kick on goal from right outside the box. Her bending shot dinged off the crossbar and out of play.
> ECU netted the game-winner in the 53rd minute. Morgan Dewey fed Tori Riggs on a cross from left of the box. Riggs one-touched it to score the sole goal of the contest.
> The Owls had a final opportunity to net the equalizer with 30 seconds left in the match. Keitel served a corner kick into the box and Aisha Brown leapt to meet it. Brown's header landed wide left of the net.
Match Notes
> In the 32nd minute, Morgan Basileo thwarted a threatening Pirates' shot. A striking Daria Draovitch rocketed a shot on goal, but Basileo was ready and pushed it wide of the right post.
> The Owls had two more strong offensive chances late in the first half. In the 43rd minute, Emma Wilkins and Gabriela Johnson made runs toward the goal. Wilkins connected with Johnson, whose shot was pushed out of bounds by the keeper. A minute later, Brown picked off an ECU pass and pushed up the left flank. Brown found Johnson who quickly dished to Wilkins in the box. Wilkins tried to break free from her defender, but her shot was blocked.
> Temple earned six corners to ECU's four, setting the Owls up for several threatening scoring opportunities.
Quotable
"I thought we defended very well," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "The backs did a great job and Morgan [Basileo] had some saves too. Defensively, the back four and Natalie, Juliet and Julia, the three that played in midfield, all played well. We also had some good chances off of set plays."
Next Up
> Temple will wrap up the regular season with a three-game home stand. To kick off the series of games at the Temple Sport Complex, the Owls will take on the Tulsa Hurricanes on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 3:30 p.m.
