10.21.18 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple University men's soccer squad looks to bounce back on Tuesday, Oct. 23 when they host Philadelphia Soccer Six rival, Penn. The local match-up is set to kick off at 7:00 p.m. at the Temple Sports Complex.
Last Time Out
> The Owls are coming off of one of their toughest battles of the season against No. 13/20 UConn, when they fell 2-1 to their AAC foes on Saturday night after an 88th minute goal.
> Temple got on the board first in front of the 4,800 plus UConn crowd in the 39th minute, when Leandros Lillis found himself with the ball at his feet in the center of the field, nutmegging his defender and sending the ball through to Jalen Campbell. Campbell threaded his defenders to find fellow freshman Elias Hellgren Villegas to the left of the box, who slid the ball past the UConn keeper's left side and into the net for his second goal in as many games this season.
> In the 63rd minute, a UConn player was brought down just on the edge of the goal box, allowing the Huskies to equalize on a converted penalty kick. After fluctuating possession and multiple threatening opportunities from both sides, UConn was able to find the back of the net in the 88th minute when a high Temple back line forced a Husky hail mary shot that sailed over the head of Simon Lefebvre. Despite the sideline referees holding up their flags, the offsides call ultimately was overruled to hand UConn the game winner.
Scouting the Owls
> Temple enters the match with an overall record of 4-8-3, earning a 1-3-1 tab in American Athletic Conference play. The conference win for the Owls came over a national recognized UCF squad on Sept. 21, when Temple upset the Knights and shut out one of the best players and offenses in the country.
> Every one of Temple's losses have been by a one goal deficit this season, illustrating how tight the competition has been in each of these games. Three losses came from golden goals in overtime play, and the most recent came in the last two minutes of regulation. The score sheet has not been an accurate representation of the talented Temple squad this season, who has competed indefinitely in each of their 15 games.
> Junior Lukas Fernandes has been a consistent offensive threat for the Owls, as he leads the team in points (14), goals (5) and assists (4). Campbell has worked his way into the second spot on the score sheet for Temple, contributing seven points from two goals and three assists so far in his freshman campaign. Hellgren Villegas and Justin Hahn have also positively impacted the Cherry and White offense, each compiling six points on the season from two goals and two assists.
> Junior Nick Sarver was named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll last week for his tremendous efforts in Temple's 3-2 OT loss at USF. He posted a career-high three point game from his right back position, netting Temple's equalizer early in the match and assisting their other goal. Aside from leading the offense in points for the day, Sarver also played a critical role in the Temple back four that thwarted many of USF's 25 shots.
> The Owls have found a recent offensive flare, netting nine of their 15 goals in the last five matches. The goals have been well distributed, coming from Hellgren Villegas, Hahn, Sarver, Campbell, Pierre Cayet, Belal Mohamed and Fernandes in the most recent games.
Scouting the Quakers
> Penn is led by head coach Brian Gill, who is in his first year at the helm of the program.
> The Quakers have compiled an overall record of 2-4-5, earning a 0-3-1 tab in Ivy League play. Their two wins on the season have come over Monmouth in their season opener on Aug. 31 and Marquette on Sept. 7.
> Last time on the pitch, Penn battled fellow Ivy League squad Yale to a 1-1 draw. Despite the Bulldogs getting on the board first, the Quakers earned their point thanks to an 84th minute goal off the foot of Jake Kohlbrenner.
> Alex Touche leads the Penn offense with two goals for four points on the season. Trailing him are three of his teammates, with Kohlbrenner, Jarel Blades and Brandon Bartel each contributing three points for the Quaker offense. Bartel has been pivotal in setting up scoring chances from set pieces, contributing a team high three assists on the year from free kicks.
> Scott Forbes is a mainstay between the posts for the Quakers, playing all 11 games for 1115:28 in goal this season. He boasts a goals against average of 0.89, allowing only 11 goals to earn five shutouts on the year. He also has saved 48 shots that have come his way for a save percentage of .814.
All-Time Series
> Since the cross-town rivals met for the first time in 1965, Temple has earned a record of 7-23-6 against the Quakers. The squads most recently met in 2015, when the Owls walked away with a 3-0 victory at Rhodes Field.
