Lefebvre and Fernandes Earn AAC Weekly Accolades
10.29.18 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA -- For the second time this season, the junior pair of Lukas Fernandes and Simon Lefebvre have swept half of the American Athletic Conference weekly honors, with Fernandes being named Offensive Player of the Week and Lefebvre earning Goalkeeper of the Week accolades. Fernandes has now earned weekly recognition from the conference three times this season, after being named Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 24th and earning Weekly Honor Roll nods on Oct. 8th. Lefebvre has been the conference's Goalkeeper of the Week twice now, previously earning the title on Sept. 24th. He also has been named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this year.Â
The pair earned the recognition after posting an undefeated slate this past week at home. After a 0-0 draw against Penn on Tuesday night, Temple defeated Tulsa 1-0 for a Saturday night conference victory on Senior Night. The win over Tulsa allowed the Cherry and White to clinch a berth into the American Athletic Conference tournament, and added two blank sheets to total five so far on the season.
Fernandes notched his third game-winning goal of the season on Saturday in Temple's 1-0 win over Tulsa. Only 27 minutes into Saturday night's action, freshman Elias Hellgren Villegas made a solid tackle in the Tulsa goal box, back-heeled the ball behind his leg, and sent it across the box to Fernandes. The junior midfielder collected himself and buried the game-winner past the Golden Hurricane keeper for his sixth goal of the season. Fernandes now leads the Owls with six goals and four assists for 16 points this season, and also made multiple key defensive plays from his center mid position to give the Owls two shutouts in their undefeated week.
Lefebvre thwarted multiple shots this past week to keep both opponents scoreless in his two games between the post. In Temple's 0-0 tie against Penn on Tuesday, the 6-9 Ossun, France native made six saves in 110 minutes of action, shutting down the Penn offense and keeping the Quakers off the board. On Saturday night, Lefebvre made multiple strategic plays to stop the Tulsa offense from scoring, especially after the Owls took the first half lead. He totaled 10 saves on the week, keeping a spotless sheet and helping the Temple squad qualify for the AAC post-season tournament. Lefebvre has saved 55 shots for a .764 save percentage, earning a goals against average of just 1.09 so far this season.Â
The Owls will round out their regular season schedule next Friday, Nov. 2nd as they head to Dallas, Texas to face the SMU Mustangs. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. EST, as Temple looks to secure their official seed in the conference playoff bracket.
