-- Graduate student Alliya Butts
and sophomores Mia Davis
and Emani Mayo
have been named captains of the 2018-19 Temple women's basketball team, as announced by head coach Tonya Cardoza
All three have earned recognition from the American Athletic Conference during their careers. Butts is a three-time All-Conference and All-Big 5 selection, and was the 2014-15 Big 5 Rookie of the Year. She holds the program career record for threes, and is eighth on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,481 points. She returns to the Owls' line-up a year after a season-ending injury in 2017-18.
Davis and Mayo both shined as rookies last season, earning American Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team honors. Davis, a unanimous selection, was second on the Owls last season in scoring (11.2 ppg), rebounding (7.5 rpg), and double-doubles (5). Mayo led the team with 54 threes last year, and finished third on the Owls in scoring (9.7 ppg) and assists (67).
"Alliya has been with the program from the beginning and has grown into a leader," said Cardoza. "Mia and Emani showed great leadership even as freshmen last season and both have made great strides in the offseason. The leadership of all three will be key to our success this season."
Temple has a sneak peek tonight, hosting an exhibition game against the University of the Sciences. The free game will take place at 7:00 p.m. at McGonigle Hall.
