Volleyball Drops Tight Match to Cincinnati

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team dropped a hard fought 3-0 match to visiting Cincinnati on Friday night. The Bearcats, who received votes in the latest Top-25 poll, won three close sets, 25-18, 25-23, 28-26, to move to 13-4 overall, 4-0 in conference play. Temple dipped to 4-12, 1-3 in The American.
Keys to the Match
> Cincinnati made runs when needed, winning the last two sets by just two points each.
> The Bearcats out-hit Temple .188 to .101 with a 13-10 edge in blocks.
> Temple led late in both the second and third sets, but was unable to finish out the wins.
Individual Highlights
> Temple was led by senior Carla Guennewig who tallied nine kills and five blocks, both team highs.
> Sophomore Katerina Papazoglou finished with eight kills and 12 digs.
> Freshmen Miray Bolukbasi and Gem Grimshaw and junior Dana Westfield all added five digs each, with Grimshaw recording four blocks.Â
> Sophomore Averi Salvador ended her night with 17 digs, while graduate student Irem Asci had 11.
> Freshman Tyler Lindgren finished with 18 assists with senior Hannah Vandegrift adding 16.
Set One: Cincinnati 25, Temple 18
> Cincinnati opened up a 9-4 lead early in the frame, using a 5-1 surge.
> Temple closed the gap to just one, 14-13, on kills from Papazoglou and Asci.
> The teams traded sideouts until it stood Cincinnati 19, Temple 17, but the Bearcats used a 6-1 run to win it, 25-18.
Set Two: Cincinnati 25, Temple 23
> Neither team was able to capture momentum early in the stanza, with the set tied 10-10 early.
> From there, Temple surged slightly, going up 15-13, and holding a lead as late as 21-10
> Cincinnati quickly tied the match at 22-22, and it was tied one more time before the Bearcats got the final two points needed for a 2-0 lead.
Set Three: Cincinnati 28, Temple 26
> Another tied set saw both teams go up by just one in the early action.
> Cincinnati surged with four-straight to take a 10-6 lead, but the Owls answered with an 11-3 run to go up 17-13.
> The Bearcats battled back to tie the set at 21-21, and then continued to roll, going up 23-22.
> Four more ties followed with the match knotted at 26-26 before Cincinnati got back-to-back kills to win it 28-26.
