Volleyball Stopped by USF

PHILADELPHIA -- Despite taking the first set, the Temple volleyball team fell to visiting USF, 3-1, on Thursday night at McGonigle Hall. The Bulls moved to 18-7 overall (7-5 AAC) with a 22-25, 25-13, 25-20, 25-21 win. The Owls dipped to 5-19 (2-10 AAC).
Keys to the Match
> Temple struggled against the USF block and their tipping offense, as the Bulls finished with a 13-4 advantage in blocks, while hitting an effective .338.
> Temple was held to a .165 attack, after opening the first set with a .244 offense.
> After the Owls took the opener, USF stormed back to cruise to a second set win.
> Temple rebounded with competitive third and fourth sets, but the Bulls pulled away to seal the victory.Â
Individual HighlightsÂ
> The Owls got a pair of double-doubles from graduate student Irem Asci (17 kills, 11 digs) and Tyler Lindgren (26 assists, 11 digs).Â
> Sophomore Katerina Papazoglou added nine kills and six digs.
> Freshmen Gem Grimshaw (7 kills) and Peyton Boyd (5 kills) and graduate student Iva Deak (5 kills) rounded out the offense.
> Elsewhere, senior Hannah Vandegrift dished out 20 assists, while classmate Mia Heirakuji led all players with 19 digs.
> Sophomore Averi Salvador ended her night with seven digs.Â
Set One: Temple 25, USF 22
> Temple hit .244 holding the Bulls to a .216 attack, their lowest of the night, to grab set one.
> The match stayed tight until midway through action, USF rallied for a three-straight to take a 14-11 lead.
> Temple came all the way back, tying things at 17-17 and 18-18.Â
> Following a USF timeout, Temple struck for four unanswered points to go up 22-18, and held on for the 25-22 win.
Set Two: USF 25, Temple 13
> USF stormed back in the second, hitting .343 to tie things up.
> Temple couldn't get its offense going, hitting -.026 in the frame.
Set Three: USF 25, Temple 20
> The Bulls hit a massive .463 in the third, but still Temple kept it close.
> USF broke an early tie going ahead 16-12.
> Temple answered with a 5-2 run, backed by hot serving for Salvador, cutting it to 22-19.
> That proved to be as close as the Owls would come, as USF took three of the final four points to win it.
Set Four: USF 25, Temple 21
> The final frame was again close, but USF grabbed the momentum midway through action and stayed ahead.
> Trailing 23-16 Temple scored three-straight to make it 22-19, but couldn't get any closer.
