Temple Football and Temple Health Partner in TBI Study
11.14.18 | Football
Temple Football and Temple Health have partnered to help prevent sports-related brain injuries and keep Temple's athletes safe and healthy. Each year in the United States, approximately 3.8 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI), with the majority of these injuries falling into the category of mild TBI (mTBI). Mild traumatic brain injuries, also called concussions, can lead to lasting neurological impairment, especially after repeated occurrences.
At Temple, on-going interdisciplinary research into the prevention of TBI and is putting player safety first. We are making strides to find a solution to the concussion epidemic and how to keep the players injury free.
Now through a collaboration with Temple Health and Athletics, you can help these breakthroughs continue. Temple football provides a "lab" and is the direct beneficiary of cutting-edge safety technology. Through research with the Temple TBI team and working with Al Bellamy, director of athletic training for football, we'll outfit the entire football team with helmet sensors that can monitor impact and torque to the head during games and in practice. This will allow our athletics trainers to monitor player safety in real time. It will also provide valuable information to support not only research on brain injury but also on injury prevention, recovery and resilience.
Fans and friends can support this cutting-edge research through the Temple Athletics Helmet Sensor Campaign, which has a goal of raising $5,000 toward state-of-the-art sensors for Temple Football student-athletes. Data collected through these sensors will in turn support this important area of preventative research.
