Volleyball Notches 3-1 Win Over Wichita State

PHILADELPHIA — Temple volleyball used an all-around great team performance to top visiting Wichita State, 3-1, on Friday night at McGonigle Hall. The Owls took the four-set match, 25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 26-24 to improve to 7-21 overall, 4-12 in conference play. The Shockers, the defending American champs, move to 12-15 overall, 7-9 in conference play.

Keys to the Match
> The Owls got runs when they needed it tonight, recording come-from-behind wins in the first and fourth sets.
> Temple out-hit the Shockers, .229 to .219, working around a 10-3 Wichita State advantage in blocks.
> After the Owls went up 2-0, Wichita State took a close third set. With the match looking like Wichita would tie things at 2-2, Temple battled back to win the fourth set to stave off the Shockers.
> The Cherry and White got career performances from a number of individual players, but it was the team effort that sealed the victory for Temple.

Individual Highlights
> Freshman Miray Bolukbasi led the Owls, smashing her career-high with 19 kills while hitting .412.
> Graduate student Iva Deak had 13 kills, hitting .417.
> Senior Carla Guennewig tied her career-best with 10 kills.
> Sophomore Katerina Papazoglou notched a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.
> Freshman Tyler Lindgren dished out 32 assists with nine digs, while her senior counterpart, Hannah Vandegrift added 25 kills and eight digs.
> Senior libero Mia Heirakuji had a fantastic match with 23 digs, while sophomore Averi Salvador added 10 digs in the win.

Set One: Temple 25, Wichita State 23
> Temple came from behind to go up 1-0 with a first set win.
> The Owls kept it close early, until an 8-3 run saw Wichita State go up 14-9.
> Temple came all the way back to tie it at 20-20 on back-to-back Guennewig kills.
> The Owls run continued to the end, as Temple closed it out with five of the final eight points.

Set Two: Temple 25, Wichita State 20
> Temple hit .302 en route to a 2-0 lead in the match. 
> Temple trailed only 4-2 in the match, taking the lead with a 5-1 surge and holding.
> Wichita State got to within one at 12-11, but Temple pushed forward with three unanswered points.
> With Temple leading 24-18, the Shockers spoiled a pair of set points, but an attack error gave the Owls the set and the 2-1 lead.

Set Three: Wichita State 25, Temple 23
> Wichita State used a late run to get on the board, to make it 2-1.
> Temple started strong, going up 5-2 out of the gate.
> The Owls stayed on top until a 3-0 Wichita State run tied it at 15-15.
> The match was tied three more times until the Owls took control, going up 22-19 on a Westfield kill.
> Wichita State made its final move with a 6-1 run that tied the match at 22-22, and pushed it to a 25-23 Shockers win.

Set Four: Temple 26, Wichita State 24
> Temple battled back from an early Wichita State lead to seal the match with a tight fourth set win.
> The Shockers opened the set on a 5-2 run and went up 16-11 to take their largest lead of the frame.
> Temple cut the lead to four, before Wichita State pushed it to a six-point lead at 20-14.
> The Shockers led late, 22-17, and looked to be forcing a fifth set before Temple began its comeback.
> Brought on to serve, Irem Asci keyed three unanswered points, including an ace that cut to 22-20.
> The teams traded sideouts to make it 23-21 before two Bolukbasi kills and one from Papazoglou tied it at 23-23.
> The Shockers answered with a kill to to get set point at 24-23.
> Temple countered with another Bolukbasi kill to make it 24-24, then a Deak ace and one final Bolukbasi winner to take the set and match.
