Second Quarter Marist Run Dooms Women's Basketball in Loss

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Another career best effort from sophomore Mia Davis was nullified by a 13-4 second quarter Marist run, as the Temple women's basketball team fell on the road to the Red Foxes, 74-68. The Owls' record evens to 2-2, while Marist improves to a perfect 3-0 with the win.
Keys to the Game
> Temple led by five early in the second quarter, before Marist's 13-4 run that put the hosts up for good.
> The Owls cut it to a one point lead in the third, but the Red Foxes led by five after three.
> Temple got as close as a four-point deficit late in the fourth quarter, but Marist iced the game by going 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
> The Red Foxes slightly out-shot Temple, 41% to 39%, but forced 16 Owls turnovers, while giving the ball up just 10 times.
> Temple held a 45-36 advantage on the boards, but missed key free throws in the fourth quarter, as Marist held on.

> Davis, who has tallied career-bests in all four games for the Owls this year, ended with 28 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
> Junior Shannen Atkinson picked up her first career double-double with points and 10 rebounds.
> Graduate student Alliya Butts finished with 17 points and a pair of steals.
> Rounding out the box score, sophomore Desiree Oliver finished with nine points and senior Lena Niang added five rebounds.

> A back-and-forth first quarter saw both teams take early leads.
> Trailing 13-11, Temple closed the frame with a 10-4 run to go up 21-18 at the break.
Second Quarter
> Marist quickly tied the game at 21-21, before Temple used a Butts three and a Davis lay-up to take its largest lead of the game at 26-21.
> The Red Foxes again answered, using an 13-4 surge, including three from long-range to go up 34-30.
> The teams traded baskets to close the half with Marist up four, 37-33.
Third Quarter
> Temple cut the lead to 42-41, but a 9-0 Marist run gave them their largest lead of the game at 51-41.
> The Owls countered with a 5-0 run to close the gap to five, 51-46, after three.
Fourth Quarter
> Temple cut the lead to four points twice, but time wasn't on the Owls' side.
> Marist finished out the game on the free throw line, to close out the win.
