Football's Chris Wiesehan Nominated for the 2018 Broyles Award

11.7.18 | Football

PHILADELPHIA, PA.- The Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation announced today their nominees for the 2018 Broyles Award, which honors college football's top assistant coaches. The list of 53 nominees includes Temple's Offensive Line/Run Game Coordinator Chris Wiesehan.

Wiesehan tutored a mostly experienced Owls' offensive line which has only allowed 11 sacks on the year. Jaelin Robinson (LT), Jovahn Fair (LG), Matt Hennessy (C), Vincent Picozzi (RG), and James McHale (RT) entered the year as the starting group. Hennessy has played especially well under Wiesehan, consistently grading out on PFF as one of Temple's top overall performers. However, Wiesehan has also brought along two true freshmen - Adam Klein (six starts) and Isaac Moore - who have received valuable snaps throughout the season. QB Anthony Russo and RB Ryquell Armstead are also reaping the benefits of Temple's young and successful offensive line. Russo is fifth in the conference in passing yards despite only starting seven games this season. Armstead is third in the conference averaging 109.7 yards per game. The offense also set a program record for most yards in a game (670) against UCF.

An 18-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, along with a committee representing the Football Writers Association of America, will select 15 semi-finalists and five finalists from the list of nominees as well as an overall winner. Those finalists will be invited to travel to Little Rock, Ark., where the 2017 Broyles Award winner will be announced on Tuesday, December 5th at the Marriott Hotel.

This will mark the second straight year a Temple assistant has been nominated. Jim Panagos, Temple's defensive line coach, was nominated in 2017. The winner of the 2017 Broyles Award was Tony Elliott, co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach at Clemson. Winners from the past five seasons are not eligible to be nominated for the Broyles Award.
