Men's Basketball Goes for Another Upset of #19/18 Wichita State on Thursday

2.13.18 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Looking for momentum to lead to a second upset of Wichita State, Temple men's basketball takes its five-game win streak on the road to face the #19/18 Shockers (19-5, 9-3) at 7 p.m. (EST) on Thursday, Feb. 15. The Owls (15-10, 7-6) first beat then #16/16 Wichita State just two weeks ago, 81-79 in overtime at home on Feb. 1.

Scouting Temple
> Temple has seen a true turnaround as of late, having won five straight and seven of its last eight. The Owls last faced Wichita State just two weeks ago, and upset the then-16th ranked Shockers 81-79 in overtime at home for the second of their five consecutive victories.
> The Owls notched their 1,900th program win with a 90-73 defeat of ECU on Feb. 7, led by sophomore Quinton Rose with 23 points. Rose was one of six to reach double figures in scoring for Temple, as the Owls achieved that feat for the first time since an overtime win vs. La Salle on Nov. 11, 2016.
> Rose, who leads Temple and ranks eighth in the American Athletic Conference with 14.9 points per game, has scored 20 or more points eight times this season, including the last two games (led TU with 20 points at USF). He was named the Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week on Feb. 12.
> Freshman J.P. Moorman II came off the bench for his first career double-double in the ECU win, adding a career-high 12 rebounds to a career-high 11 points. His points-rebound double-double was the first by a freshman since Lavoy Allen in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
> For his efforts, Moorman was named the AAC Rookie of the Week on Feb. 12.
> Shizz Alston, Jr. (13.4 ppg) notched his first career double-double with 15 points and 10 assists in the Owls' win at Tulane on Feb. 4 - the first points/assists double-double since Will Cummings in Dec., 2014.
> Senior forward Obi Enechionyia is the Owls' third double-figure scorer at 11.1 ppg, and leads the team while ranking eighth in the conference with 6.4 rebounds per game. His 38 total blocks are tied for the league lead.
> Either Rose or Alston have led or tied for the team lead in scoring in 19 of 25 of Temple's games in 2017-18.

Scouting Wichita State
> The #19/18 Shockers were ranked as high as #5 in both polls earlier this season before suffering an 0-2 week in mid-January with losses to SMU and Houston.
> Since then, Wichita State has won four of five, with its only loss coming at Temple on Feb. 1.
> The Shockers average a league-best 83.8 points per game along with shooting a league-best .478 from the field and pulling down a conference-high 41.9 rebounds per game.
> Redshirt sophomore guard Landry Shamet leads Wichita State with 14.8 ppg and averages an AAC-best 5.2 assists per game. Three other Shockers also average in double figures in scoring including redshirt senior center Shaquille Norris (12.9 ppg) who is tied with Temple's Enechionyia for the league lead in total blocks with 38.
> Wichita State went 31-5 in 2016-17, advancing to the NCAA Second Round for a second straight year.

All-Time Series
> Temple and Wichita State are meeting for the fIfth time (second-ever as conference opponents) and the Owls have won all four meetings in the series. Each of the four games has been decided by five or fewer points.
> The teams first met as AAC rivals just two weeks ago on Feb. 1, with the Owls upsetting the #16/16 Shockers 81-79 in overtime at the Liacouras Center.
> The most recent meeting prior to this season was an 78-74 overtime victory for Temple in the 5-hour Energy Puerto Rico Tip-Off on Nov. 20, 2011.
> Prior to 2011, the teams had met once in 1983 and once in 1985. The Owls won 78-73 in Kansas on Dec. 22, 1983, and won 62-60 at home on Dec. 7, 1985.
