Women's Basketball Falls to Memphis in Overtime

PHILADELPHIA -- A little "Senior Night" magic saw the Temple women's basketball team force overtime against Memphis, but the Owls fizzled in the extra session, falling 83-78 to the Tigers on Monday night. The game closed the regular season for Temple at 11-18, 3-13, while Memphis improves to 10-19, 5-11.
KEYS TO THE GAME
> Senior Tanaya Atkinson scored the final six points of regulation for the Owls, including the game-tying three with five seconds on the clock to send the game to OT.
> In overtime, Temple scored first, but Memphis nailed three from long range to close out the win.
> Though they threatened most of the game, it wasn't until late in regulation that Memphis took the lead.
> Temple led by as many an 10 points, before the Tigers made their late run.
> Memphis out-rebounded the Owls 49-40, including 19-11 on the offensive glass to provide the difference between a pair of evenly matched teams.
INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
> Atkinson was spectacular in her final game at McGonigle Hall, finishing with 26 points, 14 rebounds, five steals, and five assists.
> The double-double was her 16th of the season and her 30th career.
> Freshman Emani Mayo finished the night with 15 points despite playing with four fouls through the fourth quarter and the overtime period.
> Senior Khadijah Berger and graduate student Mykia Jones each tallied eight points with Berger adding a team-best five assists.
> Rookie Mia Davis had eight points and eight boards, while sophomore Shantay Taylor had seven points.
FIRST QUARTER
> Temple started the game with back-to-back threes and led 8-2 early.
> Memphis chipped away and cut the lead to one, before Temple pushed it back to six on a Davis bucket.
> The Tigers closed the frame on a 10-6 surge, but the Owls still led, 21-19, after one.
SECOND QUARTER
> Both teams made significant runs in the third quarter, starting with a 7-0 Temple surge that put the Owls up 30-22.
> Memphis countered with eight unanswered points to tie the game at 30-30.
> Temple broke the tie with three before the break to lead 33-30 at the half.
THIRD QUARTER
> Though the quarter ended with each team scoring 21 points, both sides made significant runs in the frame.
> A 7-0 Temple surge saw the Owls increase the lead to the largest of the game -- 10 points with 8:18 on the clock.
> Again Memphis answered, rattling off nine straight to make it 40-39.
> Back and forth action down the stretch, but Temple scored last to preserve its three point edge.
FOURTH QUARTER
> Temple pushed its lead to five by the six minute mark in the fourth frame, as Niang hit from long range.
> From there, Memphis chipped away, using an 11-3 run to lead 68-65 with 22 seconds on the clock.
> Down to just five seconds on the clock, Atkinson nailed an off balance three to send the game into overtime.
OVERTIME
> Though Temple scored first, Memphis got hot from three, making all three of their attempts from long range to lead by as many as six in the extra session.
> Temple got the advantage down to four, but an Owls three fell short, and Temple was forced to foul.
> The Tigers then sealed the overtime win at the free throw line.
