PHILADELPHIA – Temple head coach Geoff Collins announced today the promotion of Larry Knight to Outside Linebackers/Recruiting Coordinator-Defense. He will now have a full-time coaching role after one season in an administrative capacity.
Last month, Knight was promoted to director of player personnel where he was expected to expand his role in recruiting, coordinating operations, visits and camps and also assist Collins in evaluating and developing the current and future rosters for the program. However, an opening for a full-time coach presented itself and Collins quickly promoted Knight.
"We always look to develop and promote young assistants whenever the opportunity warrants," said Collins. "Larry Knight is an exceptional young coach. He knows how to teach and to relate with our student-athletes. We were fortunate to add him to the staff last year and I'm excited to now add on-field coaching duties to his responsibilities."
Knight initially joined the Owls' staff in February 2017 as a quality control coach for defense and recruiting. Before that he served as Georgia States outside linebackers coach from 2015-16, helping the Panthers finish in the top four in the Sun Belt in scoring defense (28.3 ppg), total defense (405.6 ypg), rushing defense (181.4 ypg) and pass efficiency defense (120.3).
Knight's prior stops include being a defensive quality coach on Butch Jones' staff at Tennessee (2013-14), and a graduate assistant for Jones at Cincinnati in 2012.
The Augusta, Ga., native was a four-year letterwinner as a defensive end at Central Michigan (2007-10) and earned his degree in 2010. He was selected all-conference as a senior and helped CMU win three bowl games.
