Temple’s Randall Named to Thorpe Award Watch List
7.23.18 | Football
PHILADELPHIA - Senior safety Delvon Randall was named to the 2018 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watch Llist, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame announced today. The Paycom Jim Thorpe Award annually recognizes the best defensive back in college football.
Randall recorded 80 total tackles for the Owls in 2017, including 6.5 tackles-for-loss. He recorded his first sack and matched his career-high with four interceptions. Over the past three years, Randall has been a staple of the Temple secondary, undoubtedly one of the leaders of one of the top defenses in the country. He also has been a great example of consistency, playing in all 41 games since his freshman year. He's improved or equaled his number of tackles and interception total each of his first three seasons, which benefits him going into his final year with the Owls.
This is the first time that Randall has been named to the Thorpe Award watch list. The list includes 35 of the nation's best defensive backs, representing 11 conferences. The preseason watch list is selected by a screening committee who compiles a list of 30-50 players.
The award is based on performance on the field, athletic ability and character. As such, it is considered one of the most coveted awards in college football. The award recipient is selected by the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award National Selection Committee, which boasts members of the NCFAA, an Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in-house award committee, former Paycom Jim Thorpe Award recipients, and sportswriters and college football journalists throughout the country.
The Paycom Jim Thorpe Award was established in 1986 and is named after the greatest all-around athlete in history, Jim Thorpe. As a native Oklahoman, Thorpe excelled not only as a running back, passer and kicker on the offensive side of the ball, but also stood out as a defensive back. In addition to his legendary performance on the football field, Thorpe played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.
The 2018 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award winner is selected from three finalists and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards Presented by Gildan on Thursday, December 6, 2018, on ESPN. The Paycom Jim Thorpe Award commemorative banquet will be held on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, in Oklahoma City.
This is Randall's second Watch List this summer. He was named to the Bednarik Award watch list last week. He is among five Temple players to be named to a preseason award watch list this summer, joining quarterback running back Ryquell Armstead (Doak Walker Award), center Matt Hennessy (Rimington Award), Frank Nutile (Maxwell Award), and tight end Kenny Yeboah (John Mackey Award).
