Despite a Dominant Team Performance, Women's Soccer Falls to Saint Joseph's

8.17.18 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA -- In a hard-fought battle, the Temple women's soccer team (0-1) fell to Saint Joseph's (1-0) on Friday night at the Temple Sports Complex. The Owls excelled on all ends of the field, but a goal in the final 20 seconds off a corner sealed the match for the Hawks.

Keys to the Match
> Junior goalkeeper Morgan Basileo made numerous big saves to thwart great looks from Saint Joseph's.
> Saint Joseph's scored an early goal in the first half, but Temple tied it up with a fantastic strike from junior forward Jules Blank.
> Temple dominated possession and got several quality looks on goal, but the late score by the Hawks won it for the visitors.

Match Notes
> The best chance to score for the Owls in the first half came off a pass from sophomore defender Marissa DiGenova to a striking Kerri McGinley that fell wide left.
> Junior forward Jules Blank scored the equalizer for Temple with a quick strike to the right side of the goal in the 50th minute.
> Junior defender Emily Keitel had a great chance to score off a corner from Blank with a header that was blocked at the last moment by a Saint Joseph's defender
> Basileo tallied 17 saves in the contest.
> The Owls played 17 student-athletes, showcasing their depth as a team.

Quotable
> "That was total and utter dominance by Temple," said Temple head coach Seamus O'Connor. "I don't think we've dominated a game versus St. Joe's that much in a long time. So to come away from it with nothing is devastating."
> Regarding the game-winning goal by Saint Joseph's in the last seconds of the game, O'Connor said it's a learning moment. "On set plays like that it's hard because it's not tactics," said O'Connor. "It's just doing your job and having more heart and desire to get that ball out."
> "This was probably one of the best performances we've had in a long time in terms of possession," O'Connor said.
