8.31.18 | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA- Temple (3-1) prevailed through steady rain and slick turf conditions to earn its third straight win in a hard-fought battle against Maryland (2-2-1). The Owls recorded their third shutout of the season in the 1-0 win over a strong non-conference opponent.
Keys to the Match
> Sophomore midfielder Emma Wilkins cut through a pack of Maryland defenders to score the lone goal of the match, her third of the season, off an assist by freshman forward Gabriela Johnson in the 37th minute.
> Another strong defensive effort by the Owls held the Terrapins scoreless. This is the third shutout in a row for Temple.
> Senior defender Kat McCoy had a crucial block that prevented a Maryland equalizer early in the second half. McCoy cleared the ball after it slipped through the gloves of junior goalkeeper Morgan Basileo.
Match Notes
> The first half was characterized by back and forth play. Maryland came out aggressively in the second half, outshooting the Owls 10-2. Maryland had the overall shot advantage in the match (17-6).
> After falling in the season opener against Saint Joseph's on a late-game corner kick, the Owls have won their last three games. They've held their opponents scoreless in each of their wins.
> With this victory, Temple pulls ahead in the all-time series with Maryland 3-2. Maryland had won the previous two contests.
Quotable
> "It's a huge win for us in terms of mentality this year," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "From the start we talked about changing the mentality. We wanted to out possess teams and play our style of soccer."
> O'Connor spoke about how playing strong competition in the American Athletic Conference helps prepare the team to compete against tough non-conference foes like Maryland. "The advantage of playing in [the American] is you can come out and play non-conference opponents who are that good and have the confidence to just go for it."
