Women's Soccer Falls 3-1 to Central Connecticut State

9.2.18 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA- Temple (3-2) fell 3-1 to Central Connecticut State (3-1-1) in a match characterized by physical play and numerous shifts in control. The Owls had several solid looks on goal, including a penalty kick in the second half, but the Blue Devils were able to hold on for the win.

Keys to the Match
> Sophomore midfielder Emma Wilkins notched the sole goal for the Owls, her fourth of the season. Wilkins converted on a baseline cross from junior midfielder Morgan Morocco in the 52nd minute.
> Temple conceded a penalty kick to Central Connecticut State in the 25th minute after the Owls fouled the Blue Devils while defending a corner kick.
> The Owls had a great chance to cut into the 3-1 Blue Devils lead with a penalty kick in the 75th minute. Temple earned the penalty kick after a Central Connecticut State player held junior defender Emily Keitel's jersey during an Owls corner. Sophomore defender Marissa DiGenova took the shot and it was deflected by the keeper. A second chance opportunity was there, but the keeper corralled the deflection.

Match Notes
> This loss marked the end of Temple's three-game win and shutout streak. The team has held its opponents scoreless in each of its victories.
> The Owls held the slight advantage in shots over the Blue Devils (15-13) and in corners (7-4), but were unable to capitalize on open opportunities.

Quotable
> "With the missed penalty kick and the open goal we missed, [the score is] 3-3," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "We come out of here disappointed, but it's good because we can learn from it. It's up to us to figure it out. We don't usually miss those open chances. It's on us, but we'll learn from it."
> In regards to the high number of foul calls/non-calls, O'Connor said, "I don't ever have a problem with us playing physical. I never have a question of us being able to step up and be physical. We have players that can be physical and keep their composure."
> Looking ahead to Lehigh, "we want to get back to playing our game," said O'Connor. "We need just a little bit more improvement in the final third… We're not as productive [there] as we need to be. We need to spend this week looking at that and see if we can figure out the final third. We're looking for better movement and better production on that end of the field, more creating and more quality chances."

Next Up
> Temple will travel to Lehigh to take on the Mountain Hawks on Friday, Sept. 7 at 5 p.m.
