Men's Soccer Falls 2-1 to Princeton in Third Straight OT Contest
9.12.18 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. – Despite a comeback goal from sophomore Justin Hahn in the 73rd minute, the Temple Men's Soccer squad (2-4) fell to the Princeton Tigers (2-3), 2-1. For the third time in as many games, the deciding goal came after 90 minutes of regulation.
How It Happened
> The Owls battled relentlessly once again in a dismal 97 minute competition at Princeton, but a few Temple defensive miscues provided the Tigers with early scoring opportunities. Only 11 minutes into the rainy first-half, Princeton's Benjamin Issroff sent a long ball to teammate Sean McSherry, who chested the ball down, ripped a shot and slipped it right inside of the post to put the Tigers up 1-0.
> Despite being down a goal, the Owls fought for the equalizer, dominating possession once they found their footing. Towards the end of the first half, Temple provided a flurry of offensive attacks, applying constant pressure on the Tigers defense. The closest opportunity for the Owls came in the 37th minute of play when junior Leandros Lillis rocketed a corner kick that curled to the top of the six yard box, finding the head of Zach Brown who sent it just high of the crossbar.
> After creating many opportunities, the time finally came for the Owls in the 72nd minute of play. Freshman Jalen Campbell dribbled up the left flank, beating a Princeton defender to place the ball in the 18 yard box. Ready at the right post was Hahn, who buried a one-time shot past the Princeton keeper, putting the Owls on the board with his first goal of the season.
> For the third straight time for the Owls, the game was not yet over in the first 90 minutes of regulation. Temple dominated overtime play, maintaining the ball in Princeton's defensive third and creating multiple scoring chances.
> In the 97th minute of play, a long clearance from the Tiger's back line caught the Owls off-guard. Princeton's Jeremy Colvin captured the ball in Temple's defensive territory, beat a lone Owl defender and got around junior goalkeeper Simon Lefebvre to bury the game-winning goal.
Notable
> Only half (three out of six) of Temple's games this season have ended in under 90 minutes, as Temple has now played three straight overtime competitions, compiling a record of 1-2. The last time Temple finished a game in under 90 minutes was on September 2nd when they knocked down No. 25 ODU with a man-down goal.
> Hahn's goal sends him to the top of the score sheet for the Owls, putting him tied for first with Campbell and Zach Brown with one goal apiece. Campbell's assist bumps him to the lead for most points with three, coming from one assist and one goal. Seven different Temple players have now earned at least one point for the squad, demonstrating the depth their offense possesses.
> Tonight's match was the sixth contest of Temple's 2018 season, and all six games have ended by a deficit of only one goal.
From the Coach
> "We started the match off slower than previous games, and it took some time for us to work out the issues," noted head coach Brian Rowland. "The guys battled relentlessly and the effort was there from each player, which proved into the second half when we were really in control of the game. These things happen, but I know we will be resilient and come out on the other side as a better team."
