Golf Places Sixth at Cornell Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – Temple Golf struggled out of the gate in the final round at the Cornell Invitational, but recovered over the back nine to finish sixth out of 15 teams in its opening tournament of the 2018-18 season.

Recapping the Day

Redshirt senior John Barone, who started the day in second place at six-under, was five over after 15 holes. The Dunmore, Pa. native birdied the final three holes to finish tied for third among the 81 golfer field with a four-under 209.
Barone finished the day with 16 birdies, the most in the field, while Temple, as a team, was tied for second with 46 birdies.
Freshman Conor McGrath tied Barone for the Owls' best round, carding a two-over 73. McGrath played the final nine at one under to tie senior Gary McCabe for 43^rd overall with a 224.
Senior Sam Soeth had his best round of the weekend, shooting a three-over 74. Two of his three birdies on the day came in the final three holes as he finished tied for 71^st with a 231.
Senior Trey Wren, who started the day at even par, struggled with a six-over 77 to tie for 26^th with a 219.

The Field

Yale (839) breezed to the team title, easily besting runner up Dartmouth (863) by 25 strokes.
Temple carded a 21-over 873, to finish 10 shots behind Dartmouth.
Eoin Leonard (Yale) and Jared Nelson (Siena) tied for the lead at six-under 207. Leonard won medalist honors with a birdie on the second playoff hole.

Quotable

"We just came out real flat today," said Temple head coach Brian Quinn. "Thankfully John, Conor and Sam all finished strong. We now just need to shake the rust off and hopefully we will be better prepared to play going forward. I am looking forward to a much better week at Davidson."
