PHILADELPHIA— Temple women's tennis will continue its fall season at the Cissie Leary Invitational, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. The 22nd iteration of this event will feature singles and doubles action and will take place Friday, Sept. 21 through Sunday, Sept. 23.
The Owls
> Temple is led by head coach Steve Mauro, who is in his 11th year at the helm of the women's program.
> The Owls finished the 2018 spring season with a 10-8 overall record, going 2-1 in the American and 7-1 at home.
> Temple's team has a new look this year, as five of the nine student-athletes are fresh faces on the Owls' roster. The Owls return veterans Oyku Boz, Cecilia Castelli, Kristina Titova and Alice Patch. Newcomers include freshmen Ruoyu Chen, Stefaniya Surikova and Yining Tian and junior transfers Oleksandra Doroshenko and Chunan Xiang.
> Last time on the court, the team competed at the Princeton Invitational. The Owls had a solid showing in the cherry and white against strong competition for their first contest of the fall season.
From Coach Mauro
> "The girls are very excited to play in this upcoming tournament at the Cissie Leary Invitational," said head coach Steve Mauro. "We are coming off a good tournament last week at Princeton and we're excited about the opportunity to play this weekend. We'll be looking to change some doubles combinations to figure out which ones work best. The girls have been having good practices all week and we expect a successful upcoming tournament."
The Competition
> The Owls will face some familiar foes this weekend: Columbia, Cornell, Drexel, Penn, Penn State and Princeton. Notably, Temple squared off against Princeton and Penn at last weekend's Princeton Invitational.
Schedule
> Matches will start at 9 a.m. both Friday and Saturday and will run through 4-5 p.m. Sunday's schedule is to be determined. The full weekend schedule will be detailed when the draws are released.
About the Cissie Leary Memorial Invitational
> First contested in 1997, the Cissie Leary Invitational honors the memory and legacy of Cissie Leary, head women's tennis coach at Penn from 1977-1996. She had 16 winning seasons at the helm of the Red and Blue, compiling a career record of 229-119. In 1995, her team was 16-7 overall, and 6-1 in the Ivy League to earn a trip to the NCAA East Regional. Leary passed away in November of 1996 following a long battle with scleroderma, and this tournament has been held every year since in her honor.
