Football's Armstead named to Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll
9.24.18 | Football
PHILADELPHIA – Temple running back Ryquell Armstead has been named to the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll for his game against Tulsa. The award goes to the most versatile player in college football.
Armstead, who also played defense and special teams, is joined on the list by wide receivers Mecole Hardman (Georgia), Rondale Moore (Purdue), Sean Riley (Syracuse) and Marcus Simms, Jr. (WVU).
Armstead was recognized for his performance against Tulsa where he rushed for 108 yards and one touchdown on 24 attempts – a good day's work for a running back. That it was his third straight 100+ yard performance, the first by a Temple player since 2011, didn't impress the voters. What he did when he wasn't on offense made the difference for this award. Armstead played four plays on defense and registered his first career sack. By doing so, he became just the third player in FBS since 2000 to record both 100-yards rushing and a sack in the same game. For additional measure, Armstead played seven plays on the kickoff and punt teams.
The Paul Hornung Award, now in its ninth season, is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission and football legend and Louisville native Paul Hornung. This is the Paul Hornung Award's third year as an associate member of the National College Football Awards Association.
The Louisville Sports Commission successfully launched the Paul Hornung Award in 2010 to honor its namesake and native son, and to promote outstanding performances by versatile college football players who often go unnoticed. Each week during the season, a panel of college football experts selects players for the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll based on performance. A national selection committee comprised of 17 sports journalists and former NFL stars votes for the Hornung Award finalists and the winner, with fan voting powered by Texas Roadhouse comprising the 18th vote.
