Men's Soccer Set for AAC Road Battle at Memphis

10.11.19 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's soccer team (3-6-1, 0-1-1 AAC) is back for their third American Athletic Conference battle of the season on Saturday, Oct. 12 when they head to Tennessee to take on RV Memphis (8-2-0, 2-0-0 AAC). The Owls are on the hunt to snap a six-game win streak held by the Tigers in the 8 p.m. (ET) conference showdown.

Last Time Out
> The Owls are coming off of a 1-0 loss to the No. 10 St.  John's Red Storm on Tuesday evening in Queens, N.Y. Temple battled relentlessly against its first top-10 opponent of the season, but was unable to break down the talented St. John's defense that has allowed just five goals in 11 games. Despite being held to just one shot on goal in 90 minutes of play, the Red Storm's offensive leader Tani Oluwaseyi netted his seventh goal of the season to lift the Johnnies to victory.
> Illustrating why their offense ranks 13th in the nation at 2.30 goals per game, the Red Storm put constant pressure on the Owls' back line but the Temple defense stepped up to shut down various orchestrated chances by their top-10 opponent. In the first 45 minutes of play, the Owls held the Johnnies to just five shots and did not allow them to strike on target.
> The Red Storm's game winner was their only shot on goal of the match, as the Temple defense was able to shut down countless chances and throw their opponent off. St. John's barely nudged Temple in shots (13-12), but the Owls saw more corner kick opportunities (4-3). The Temple offense forced St. John's to make seven saves, whereas Lefebvre had his second straight game without a save.

Scouting the Owls
> Temple is coached by Brian Rowland in his second season at the helm of the program. He's led the Owls to a 3-6-1 record so far this season after opening up with an extremely challenging non-conference slate. St. John's was the third top-15 opponent the Owls have faced this season, and Memphis is one of six teams on Temple's schedule that appeared in this week's polls.
> Fernandes leads the Temple offense with five points from a pair of goals and an assist in nine games played. He's fired off a team-high 35 shots with 20 on frame, spearheading the Temple offense that has outshot opponents 131-95 so far this season. Freshman Amir Cohen trails his senior captain with three points from one goal and one assist this year.
> The Owls have been a powerhouse on the defensive end this season, shutting out opponents on three occasions and allowing just 10 goals in as many games played. Senior goalkeeper Simon Lefebvre has saved 26 shots fired his way, earning a goals against average of 0.98 and a save percentage of .722.

Scouting the Tigers
> Memphis is coached by Richard Mulrooney in his sixth season heading the program. So far this year, he's led the Tigers to an 8-2 overall record with a six-game active win streak and a clean slate in the American thus far. Memphis earned five votes in the United Soccer Coaches Polls this week and notably upset No. 10 Xavier, 3-2, on Sept. 14.
> The Tigers picked up their sixth consecutive win on Tuesday with a 4-1 victory over the UAB Blazers. Memphis had four different goal scorers in a contest that split two goals per half.
> The Memphis offense is spearheaded by Sam Ashton, who has accumulated 21 points from nine goals and three assists in 10 games played. The senior forward has converted both penalty kicks he's been tested with this season and has a team-leading three game winning goals for the Tigers. Junior Christoforos Kourtis has also reached double-digit points as he's notched three goals and dished out four assists for Memphis.
> Parker Lackland has started all 10 games between the posts for the Tigers and has allowed 12 goals in 922:55 minutes played. He's notched 20 saves on the year for a save percentage of 0.625 and has posted three shutouts, one of which came in a 1-0 win over conference foe UConn.

The Series
> The Owls have accumulated a 3-1-2 record against the Tigers since the teams first met at the formation of the American Athletic Conference in 2013. The last two meetings between the conference foes have required extra time, with the Owls capturing the 2-1 double overtime victory in 2017 and the squads battling to a 1-1 draw last season.
