Volleyball Falls in Three at SMU

10.18.19 | Women's Volleyball

DALLAS — The Temple volleyball team fell 3-0 at SMU in Dallas on Friday night, continuing American Athletic Conference play. The Mustangs topped the Owls, 25-19, 25-16, and 25-20, to move to 12-5 overall, 5-2 in the American. Temple meanwhile, dips to 10-8, 1-6 in conference play.

Keys to the Match
> SMU held just a slim 42-41 lead in kills and digs were even at 49-49, but the Owls were hampered by hitting errors.
> Temple racked up 23 errors to hit just .154 in the match, while the Mustangs finished with a .315 attack.
> Temple stayed in each set, but succumbed to late SMU rallies to fall behind 0-2.
> A tight third set again saw SMU pull away late. The Owls closed the gap down the stretch, but it was too late to force a fourth frame.

Quotable: Head Coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam
> "We played some really good sets, all the way up to 15 points, but the last 10 points we made a lot of unforced errors, and couldn't stop some SMU runs."
> "From an offensive standpoint there were times we were limited, but Gem played a good overall match, and Peyton played a tremendous match, but we needed a little more from our other outsides and middles today."
> "Overall, we just needed to execute a little better on offense and get some sideouts. We can't make those mistakes at the end of the matches and expect to win."
> "SMU has some really good middles that work hard and they're good blockers, so they didn't make things easy on our hitters. We needed to find some better solutions on offense."

Individual Highlights
> Sophomore Peyton Boyd led the Owls with 14 kills, hitting .500 in the match.
> Sophomore Gem Grimshaw notched a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs.
> Sophomore Tyler Lindgren dished out 37 assists, adding six digs.
> Junior Averi Salvador finished with 11 digs, while classmate Baleigh Jean-Philippe added three blocks.

Set One: SMU 25, Temple 19
> A tight first set featured the Owls maintaining a slim lead in the early stages.
> Temple led as late as 13-12, before SMU put together a 7-2 run to take a 20-16 lead.
> The Owls got two back, but SMU pushed it to 24-19, and then got the final kill they needed to take set one.

Set Two: SMU 25, Temple 16
> It was another late run that doomed the Owls, as SMU took a 2-0 lead.
> Back-and-forth action was the story, as the teams settled on a tie as late as 15-15.
> SMU took over from there, using a relentless 10-1 run to win 25-16.

Set Three: SMU 25, Temple
> Another late run doomed the Owls, as Temple rallied from an early deficit to lead 10-9.
> After the teams traded side-outs to tie things at 11-11, SMU began to take control.
> Four straight SMU points started the run, and after a Boyd kill, the Mustangs pushed on to make it 21-14.
> Temple rallied to make it 23-20, using a 6-2 surge powered by Boyd and Grimshaw, but it was too late, as SMU finished out the win.
