Men's Basketball Makes Rare Trip West to Take on USC Friday

11.21.19 | Men's Basketball

LOS ANGELES – It has been 14 years since Temple traveled to California for a men's basketball game, but that is where the Owls (3-0) will be Friday night when they take on USC (5-0) in a contest that is part of the Orlando Invitational.   The game will tip-off at 11 pm ET and televised live on the Pac 12 Network and broadcast on 1210 AM WPHT.   Click here for details on how to access the Pac 12 Network.

The last time Temple played in California was Nov. 17, 2005, when the Owls fell at #16 UCLA, 54-47, in the second round of the preseason NIT.

Scouting Temple
> Junior Nate Pierre-Louis leads the American in rebounding (11.0 rpg.) and steals (5.5 spg.) while topping the Owls in scoring (18.7 ppg./4th AAC) and assists (4.3 apg./3rd).  He has posted four consecutive double-doubles, becoming the first Owl to accomplish the feat since Lavoy Allen (2011).
> Seniors Quinton Rose (16.0 ppg./9th AAC) and Alani Moore II (10.3 ppg) are also averaging in double figures.  Rose, who leads the squad in three-pointers (6-14), recently became the 30th Owl to eclipse the 1400-point mark (1401).  Moore is second on the team in steals per game (2.3).
> Juniors J.P. Moorman II (5.0 ppg., 6.3 rpg.) and Justyn Hamilton (3.3 ppg., 2.7 rpg.)  round out the starters while junior De'Vondre Perry (7.7 ppg.) leads a deep Temple bench.
> The Pierre-Louis brothers made history as the first siblings to play in a Temple game together.  A freshman, Josh Pierre-Louis has averaged 2.7 points and 10 minutes per game in a reserve role.
> Temple ranks second in the nation in steals per game (12.3 pg) and 23rd in turnover margin (+7.0).

Scouting USC
> USC, under the direction of seventh-year head coach Andy Enfield, improved to 5-0 for the first time in three years behind Onyeka Okongwu's 33-point performance in a 91-84 home win over Pepperdine Tuesday night.
> It is a new look for the Trojans in 2019-20 as the core of four veterans, Jonah Mathews, Nick Rakocevic, Elijah Weaver and Charles O'Bannon Jr., are joined by 10 newcomers which includes one of the top recruiting classes nationally.
> Okongwu, a 6-9, freshman forward, has been a force for USC, leading the Trojans in scoring (18.2 ppg), rebounding (9.4 rpg) and blocks (3.6 rpg). He is shooting 64 percent from the field and 82 percent from the line.
> Rakocevic (16.4 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 2.4 spg) and Mathews (11.8 ppg) are also averaging double figures while freshman Ethan Anderson (5.0 ppg) tops the team in assists (6.1 apg).

Series History vs. USC
> This is the eighth meeting between the teams, but the first since the Owls' 1994-95 season opener, a 65-54 Temple win on Nov. 27 at the Martin Luther King Classic in Memphis.
> The teams played a series of games in Philadelphia in the late 30s, early 40s with USC, starting the season after the Owls won the 1938 NIT.  That first game was a 46-34 Trojan win on Dec. 26, 1938.  USC won four of the five meetings in the stretch with its other win occurring on Dec, 29, 1969 when the 12th-ranked Trojans defeated the Owls, 68-53, at the Far West Classic in Portland, Ore.
> USC owns a 5-2 lead in the series.
