Aaron McKie Era Gets Underway at Liacouras Center Tuesday with Drexel

11.3.19 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – The Aaron McKie era officially gets underway on Tuesday, Nov. 5 (8 pm/ESPN3/1210 AM WPHT) when the Owls host Drexel at the Liacouras Center.  It is also the second consecutive year that Temple men's basketball will set a record for its earliest season opener.  Last season the Owls hosted La Salle on Nov. 6.

Promotions

> The first 1,500 fans for the Drexel game, presented by Temple Culinary Services, will receive an All In t-shirt.
Scouting Temple
> Temple returns seven letterwinners and three starters from last year's team that posted a 23-10 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 33rd time in program history.
> Senior Quinton Rose, a preseason first team all-American Athletic Conference pick, leads the Owls with a 16.3 scoring average and was third in the AAC in steals (2.2 pg).  Juniors Nate Pierre-Louis (13.3 ppg, 5.8 rpg), a preseason second team all-AAC selection, and J.P. Moorman II (4.9 ppg, 4.2 rpg) join Rose as the team's returning starters.  The trio will also serve as team captains.
> Senior guard Alani Moore II (4.1 ppg) is expected to take over the point guard slot vacated by the graduation of first team all-conference honoree Shizz Alston, Jr. while junior Justyn Hamilton (4.1 ppg) will split time in the post with senior Damion Moore (2.9 ppg).
> Junior De'Vondre Perry (4.1 ppg), who started 20 games last year, will see plenty of action as will redshirt junior transfer Monty Scott, redshirt freshman Arashma Parks and incoming freshman Josh Pierre-Louis.
> When the Pierre-Louis brothers take the court it will be the first time siblings were on the same roster in program history.
> The Owls have won three straight season openers and five straight season openers held at the Liacouras Center.  The last time Temple lost a season opener in its on-campus arena was Nov 19, 2004, an 80-78 defeat to Auburn.

Scouting Drexel

> Drexel, under the direction of fourth-year coach Zach Spiker, returns two starters from last year's 13-win, sophomore Camren Wynter (11.3 ppg, 174 assists) and junior James Butler (10.3 ppg/8.2 rpg).
> The Dragons are picked to finish eighth in the Colonial Athletic Association preseason poll with Wynter selected to the preseason second team.
> A familiar name to Temple fans is on the Drexel roster, redshirt sophomore Tim Perry, Jr., son of the Owl great Tim Perry (1984-88).  The younger Perry averaged 2.3 points and 3.1 rebounds last season.

Series History vs. Drexel

> Temple leads Drexel 30-9 all-time, and have won 10 of the last 11 meetings.  The lone Drexel win in that stretch came on Dec. 22, 2006.
> Last year, the Owls defeated the Dragons 82-64 at the Palestra on Dec. 22, 2018.
> Six of Drexel's nine wins in the series were over 100 years ago, as the Dragons went 6-2 in games against Temple from 1901 to 1908.
