PHILADELPHIA – With the 2019 college football regular season concluded, many media outlets have published their All-America teams. Three Owls – freshman running back Re'Mahn Davis, redshirt-junior center Matt Hennessy, and redshirt-junior defensive end Quincy Roche – have been recognized.
All three were named to more than one team with Roche earning the most recognition. The redshirt junior was voted first team by Sports Illustrated, and earned second team honors from Sporting News, USA Today and Pro Football Focus. Roche was named the Defensive Player of the Year by both the American Athletic Conference (AAC) and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC).
Hennessy, also a redshirt junior, earned second team honors from USA Today and Pro Football Focus, while garnering a third team selection by the Associated Press.
Davis was recognized as one of the best true freshmen in the country earning first team All-Freshman honors from ESPN and Pro Football Focus.
Roche accumulated 44 tackles, an AAC-leading 18.0 TFLs and 13.0 sacks, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble, and a blocked kick. Roche was a force on the edge all season, including an outstanding four game stretch to finish the season. In the final four games, Roche had 10.0 sacks and 13.0 TFLs. PFF graded Roche at a 93.5 which ranked second best in the FBS (to Ohio State's Chase Young). He also led the country in QB pressures with 67.
Hennessy earned national honors for the first time but has earned numerous athletic and academic accolades in his career. A year ago the Bardonia, N.Y., native was named the AAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Year and he was recently named first team All-AAC and a finalist for the Rimington Trophy, given to the nation's best center. He capped off his season as the highest graded center (87.0) in the FBS, according to PFF. He allowed just four quarterback pressures and no sacks on 826 total snaps this season. With his leadership, the line helped Davis to a team-leading 900 rushing yards.
Davis led the Owls in rushing yards while splitting time for most of the season with senior Jager Gardner. His yardage, attempts (178), rushing touchdowns (7) and 100-yard games (3) rank second on Temple's all-time list among freshman to only Bernard Pierce. His best games came in back-to-back week against Georgia Tech and ECU when he broke the 100-yard barrier twice totaling 292 yards on 53 carries with three scores. He did all this despite not earning a role till the final week of the preseason.
As of 2009, the College Football All-America Team has been composed of the following College Football All-American first teams: Associated Press (AP), Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Walter Camp Foundation (WCFF), The Sporting News (TSN), Sports Illustrated (SI), Pro Football Weekly (PFW), ESPN, CBS Sports (CBS), College Football News (CFN), Pro Football Focus (PFF), Rivals.com, and Scout.com.
