Outdoor Track is Back: Owls Head to Charlotte for 49er Classic

PHILADELPHIA – Propelling off its fifth indoor season under the direction of head coach Elvis Forde, the Temple University track and field squad is eager to showcase its talent on the outdoor track for the first time in 2019. The Owls will kick off the outdoor season this Friday-Saturday, March 15-16 in Charlotte, N.C. when they head south to compete in the Charlotte 49er Classic.
About the Charlotte 49er Classic
> Temple's 2019 outdoor debut will be hosted by the Charlotte 49ers at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center.
> Last year, the Niners track and field team hosted the largest field ever at the 49er Classic, with about 70 schools bringing nearly 3,000 student-athletes to compete. This year, there will be 54 schools, unattached runners and running clubs competing in the open meet.
Scouting the Owls
Day One
> Temple will send a strong 18-person crew down to Charlotte to get their first marks of the outdoor season. Sophomore Sydney Williams will kick off the first event of the weekend for the Cherry and White, competing in the 100m hurdles at 12 pm.
> At 2:15, the sprinter trio of junior Madison Beecher, sophomore Mallorie Smith and freshman Marissa White will return to run their first 400m races of the new season. Following, Williams will compete in her second hurdle event of the day with sophomore Aisha Brown when they race the 400m hurdles at 3:30 pm.
> Sophomores Kayla Nesbitt-McEwen and Candus Burks will represent the Owls in the long jump at 3:30 pm. Following, Sophomore Lucy Jones will be back on the track for her signature event, when she competes in the 3000m steeplechase at 4:30 pm.
> At 5:10 pm, the talented distance group of sophomore Michelle Joyce, senior Katie Leisher, freshman Keegan Simonsen and junior Kira Von Ehren will race the 1500m to conclude day one of the meet.
Day Two
> Day two will start in the field, when sophomore Julianne Foering debuts her throwing skills for the first time this year at 10 am in the javelin. Nesbitt-McEwen return to in the jumps when she competes in triple and high at 11 am and 12 pm, respectfully.
> Saturday's running events will begin with sophomores Helene Gottlieb and McKenzie Gelvin and senior Ashton Dunkley in the 800m run at 12:50 pm. Then, White, Beecher and Smith will return to sprint the 200m at 2:10 pm.
> Brown will compete in the high jump at 2:30 pm as she looks to build off of a solid slew of indoor performances in her signature event. Freshman Lexi Walsh will then race the 3000m at 3:30 pm, and the weekend will conclude with the 4x400m relay at 4:50 pm.
Last Time Out
> The Owls will return from a two-week hiatus from competition following the conclusion of the indoor season at the AAC Championships. At the conference meet, the squad placed nine in the top-10 of their respective events and made two trips to the podium.
> Gottlieb had a stellar conference meet, earning All-Conference honors in both the 800m and the mile to bring a pair of medals back to North Philadelphia. In an extremely competitive 1600m field, the sophomore fought her way to the front of the pack and never looked back. Gottlieb blazed through the final 400m to finish in 4:51.48, earning third to pick up six points for the Owls.
> She hit the track again, hungry to make her mark in the 800m after a standout performance in the mile. The sophomore crushed her previous indoor personal best by over two seconds, clocking a speedy 2:08.39 to earn silver in the event.
> White was nothing short of remarkable in her first ever conference meet as an Owl. Entering the meet seeded ninth in the 400m, the freshman put on a solid showing on day one to place eighth and advance into Saturday. In the finals, she bolted through the second 200m of the race, passing two on the straightaway to finish second in the slower of the two heats. White ran a massive PR of 55.20, more than four tenths of a second faster than her previous best, passing two in the faster heat for fourth place overall. The freshman racked up five points for the Owls in the event that exemplified an outstanding rookie indoor season.
> Brown entered the high jump at 1.69m, soaring over the bar to clear the height on her third attempt. She also conquered her second height of 1.73m on her third attempt, remaining focused to advance. She nearly cleared her third height, but came up just short to tie for fifth overall and earn the Owls four points.
> Von Ehren was resilient in the 3000m to earn a point for Temple. The junior graduate student finished the race in 9:50.33, placing eighth overall in the 49-person field.
On the Lookout
> Following the conclusion of the AAC and NCAA Indoor Championships, multiple Owls ended the season as top-10 performers in the conference for their respective events.
> After an exhilarating race in the finals at the AAC Indoor Championships, White finished indoor ranked eighth overall in the 400m dash with a time of 55.20. She now enters the outdoor season after running her fastest time ever on the indoor track for the Cherry and White.
> Gottlieb finished the indoor season ranked second overall in the 800m. Running the half mile in 2:08.31 at the conference meet, Gottlieb was just over one second away from her outdoor school record time of 2:07.10. Howard and Dunkley also finished the season in the top-10, ranked eighth and 10th with times of 2:10.9 and 2:11.16, respectfully.
> Three Owls finished in the top-10 for the mile, with Gottlieb and Moore tied for second (4:48.90) and Howard seventh (4:53.14). In a similar event, Howard will enter the outdoor season looking to improve her 2018 school record in the 1500m of 4:18.73.
> In the 3000m, Moore finished the season third in the conference with a time of 9:26.12. Von Ehren joined her in the final top-10, finishing sixth after racing the 3K in 9:39.50. Von Ehren also snuck into the top-10 for the 5000m with a time of 17:09.45.
> The record-breaking distance medley relay time of 11:23.03 by Howard, White, Gottlieb and Moore at the Columbia Challenge held strong throughout the whole season, as Temple concluded indoor with the fastest time in the conference.
> Brown finished the indoor season as the fifth best high jumper in the conference. Her mark of 1.75m (5'8.75") at the Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge was an indoor personal record for her, but she will look to best her personal record of 1.82m (5'11.5") heading into outdoor.
