Women's Rowing Wins Five Medals at Knecht Cup
4.14.19 | Women's Rowing
ohnsonCHERRY HILL, N.J. -- The Temple women's rowing team won five medals to wrap up a successful showing at the 2019 Knecht Cup on the Cooper River on Sunday.
Five For Five
> Temple won a medal in every event it entered, finishing the day with one gold and four silver medals.
> Only one Owls' boat missed the podium, the third varsity "B" boat, but they raced up a category at the event and finished less than a second out of the medals.
From the Coach
> "I'm really proud of this team," said head coach Rebecca Grzybowski. "I feel like everyone has kind of uncovered a new level individually and then collectively and it's really exciting. I think there's a lot of belief and I was really impressed with how people were creating the results that happened rather than racing and seeing what happened. They were very much in control of what was going down on the course and I'm really proud of that."
> "Everyone did exactly what they need to do this weekend, and five medals in five races is the best Knecht Cup we've ever had. I think that's really fun to see and I'm excited to see what the future brings."
> On the improvement in the varsity eight from the Doc Hosea Regatta two weeks ago: "I think collectively, it's been a 1V-2V effort to get the 1V to where it was today. We've been selecting since September and shuffling lineups. They've hung with us and everyone keeps throwing it down and making it really difficult for us as coaches, which is a great problem to have."
> "At the end of the day, when everyone is in their respective boats and going to race, we're all racing as a unit, it's Temple vs. everybody else. And they did a really great job of that."
Varsity Eight
> Temple's top boat had an excellent race, finishing the event with a silver medal.
> The Owls' time of 6:44.07 was just 4.84 off the pace of the defending IRA National Champion Stanford lightweight boat.
> Temple crossed the line ahead of boats from BU, Georgetown, UNC, and Harvard-Radcliffe to win the team's fifth medal of the day.
Second Varsity Eight
> The second varsity eight boat shined, grabbing their first medal of the spring — a silver.
> The Owls finished in 7:01.15, just three seconds off the gold medal pace of UNC.
> Temple topped boats from BC, UMass, and UConn in the race.
Varsity Four
> The varsity four added to Temple's medal haul, taking silver in the grand final.
> The Owls (7:40.99) finished second behind only UNC (7:32.38), outpacing boats from BU, Stanford, Georgetown, and UConn.
Second Varsity Four
> It was gold for the second varsity four, as the Owls opened Temple's racing in winning fashion.
