PHILADELPHIA -- Temple rowing will again be represented on the international stage, as the Owls' Elaine Tierney has been named to the roster for the USRowing Under 23 National Lightweight Team Camp.

"I'm really excited to row with people who are more experienced and who have gone to world championships and can push me a lot further," said Tierney.

Tierney will head to Boston this summer, to take part in camp in order to select the boatings for the 2019 World Rowing Under 23 Championships. Last year, the lightweight women's quad finished sixth at the 2018 World Rowing Under 23 Championships.

"I'm really excited for her," said head coach Rebecca Grzybowski. "I'm excited that she put herself out there and is pursuing the opportunity race for the US in international competition, I think it's fantastic."

Tierney, a sophomore from West Chester, Pa., has made huge strides in just two seasons with the Owls. Joining the team as a preferred walk-on last year, she quickly worked her way up to a spot in the varsity eight boat as a freshman. Last year, she helped her crew to silver at both the Kelly Cup and Murphy Cup Regattas, while taking fourth at the American Athletic Conference Championships, pushing Temple to a third place finish, tying the best result for the Owls at the event.

"I rowed in high school, but I wasn't good, I was slow," explained Tierney. "But my mentality has changed and the way I train has changed, and all my teammates are always pushing me and giving me so much support, I wouldn't be as fast without them."

This season, Tierney is again a part of the varsity eight. Most recently, the Owls earned a silver medal at the Knecht Cup, catapulting the crew to earn its first American Athletic Conference Boat of the Week honor this season.

"She is just a silent grinder and she keeps getting better," added Grzybowski. "Every time you think she's at max speed, she finds a new level, and that's what you need to succeed at the elite level. So I'm really excited to see how much faster she's going to get this summer, surrounded by women with similar ambitions."

Tierney comes from a family of rowers. Her father, John, rowed in England before heading to Philadelphia to compete for both Penn AC and Vesper Boat Club. He is also a former team manager for the United States, leading the team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Tierney's mother, Ann, was a lightweight rower at Penn, who won the Head of the Charles with Vesper in a double.

Temple rowing is back in action this weekend at the Kerr Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
