Golf Posts Best Finish at the AAC Championship

4.23.19 | Men's Golf

PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Temple said goodbye to five senior golfers with the conclusion of the 2019 American Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship, presented by Air Force Reserve, but not before the quintet lifted the bar higher for the next class.   John Barone, Gary McCabe, Erik Reisner, Sam Soeth and Trey Wren finished play today and gave the Owls their best-ever finish in the program's six years in the tough AAC, placing fifth overall.
Recapping the Day
  • Temple started the day tied for third and played the front nine at one-under, moving within one stroke of second place SMU on the strength of six birdies.
  • The Owls, however, managed only five birdies on the back nine with three coming on the 18th from McCabe, Soeth and Wren.  Soeth, who was playing his first round made a dramatic 50-footer with Wren then chipping in from just left of the green.
  • McCabe had the best round for the Cherry and White, making even par to tie Barone for the team overall lead.  The pair tied for 14th overall.
  • Soeth, who was even par on the back nine before his birdie on 18, was next for Temple, carding a two-over 73.
  • Wren, who birdied two of his final three holes, was three over and finished tied for 16th, one shot behind Barone and McCabe.
  • Reisner, who was five over on the day, rounded out the squad and was tied for 20th overall.
The Field
  • Memphis (852) easily won the championship, besting runner-up SMU (864) by 12 strokes.
  •  The Mustangs were followed by UCF (865), USF (870), Temple (873), Cincinnati (878), UConn (878), ECU (884), Houston (889) and Wichita State (901).
  • SMU sophomore Mac Meissner (-13) won the individual championship, beating Cincinnati senior Austin Squires (-7) by six strokes.

Quotable
  • Head coach Brian Quinn: "I am so very proud of these young men and what they have done for Temple Golf.  Even though today did not go as we had hoped, they have carried themselves with class throughout their careers and have truly elevated our program.  The challenge now is to continue to improve, and with Conor McGrath and our returning players as well as our strong recruiting class I feel the future is very bright."
