PHILADELPHIA - Former Temple men's basketball coach Fran Dunphy received another honor as Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney presented him with a Liberty Bell in a hometown tribute ceremony held at City Hall Monday.

Dunphy, who was the recipient of an honorary doctorate degree from Temple University at last Thursday's commencement will be honored again at City Hall, this time by City Council on May 16.  He will receive the John Wanamaker Award a few weeks later on June 11.

Inducted into the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame in April, Dunphy, who stepped down as the Owls' coach following the 2018-19 season, received the Dean Smith Award presented by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association Good Guy Award and the Gene Bartow Award this year. The 2019 Big 5 Coach of the Year was also honored by many of Temple's opponents during the season for his contributions to the sport.

The all-time winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history with 580 victories, Dunphy has led Temple to 10 postseason appearances, including eight trips to the NCAA Tournament.  In his 13 seasons at the Owls' helm, he compiled a 270-162 overall record.  He led the Cherry and White to three conference championships and three regular season titles.

Prior to his arrival at Temple, Dunphy compiled a 310-163 record in 17 seasons at the Penn while taking the Quakers to nine NCAA Tournaments. A 1970 La Salle University graduate, Dunphy is the all-time winningest coach at Penn and ranks third on Temple's all-time coaching win list.

Dunphy is also just the fifth coach to win 200 at two different Division I programs while also taking both schools to six or more NCAA Tournaments.  He is joined by Lou Henson (New Mexico, Illinois), Rick Pitino (Kentucky, Louisville), Eddie Sutton (Arkansas, Oklahoma State) and Roy Williams (Kansas, North Carolina) in this elite club.

A full-time educator on and off the court, Dunphy is in his 12th year teaching in Temple's prestigious Fox School of Business. He team-teaches an honors course with Dr. Lynne Anderson, entitled, Management, Theory & Practice: From the Locker Room to the Board Room. He previously had served as a lecturer in the Wharton Executive Education program and in the management department of the Wharton School.
