7.11.19 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA -- The bracket for the 2019 Orlando Invitational was announced today and Temple will take on Maryland in the opening game of the eight-team, three-day tournament at 11 am on Thanksgiving morning (Nov. 28). The game will be televised by ESPN2.
Maryland, which returns four starters, is currently ranked ninth in the nation in ESPN's Way too Early Top 25 poll.
It will be the 11th meeting between the Owls and the Terrapins with Temple owning a 6-4 edge in the series. Temple has won the last three meetings with the most recent a 73-60 decision on Jan. 21, 2012 at The Palestra. The only prior meeting in an in-season tournament between the programs came in the championship game of the 2001 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Second-ranked Maryland won that contest over #16 Temple, 82-74, at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 9.
Temple's next game in the Orlando Invitational will be on Friday, Nov. 29 against either Texas A&M, which has advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 in two of the last four seasons, or Harvard, which has won seven of the last nine Ivy League titles. The final day of the tournament will be Sunday, Dec. 1.
The other side of the bracket pits USC against Fairfield while Marquette will take on Davidson. The Owls play at USC, projected as #25 in the country by ESPN, on Nov. 22. Marquette is ranked 23rd on the same ESPN poll.
Temple, under the direction of new head coach Aaron McKie, is coming off a 23-10 season that included a trip to the 2019 NCAA Tournament. Eleven players return from that squad including senior Quinton Rose, a second team all-conference and all-Big 5 honoree, and junior Nate Pierre-Louis, the AAC and Big 5 Most Improved Player.
The three-game tourney will be held at HP Field House at ESPN Wide World of Sports near Orlando, Fla.
