Temple University Athletics
Women's Soccer Alumna Erin Lafferty's OwlSports Summer Series Feature
7.16.19 | Women's Soccer
For this year's Summer Series, Temple Athletics is highlighting a handful of alumni in profile stories that feature their accomplishments in life after their time at the University. These individuals have taken the time to share their experiences and memories from Temple and reflect on their involvement as a student-athlete.
Our next feature of the series is women's soccer alumna Erin Lafferty ('16).
When you think back on your time at Temple, what do you recall most vividly?
When I think back to my experience at Temple University, I vividly recall the friendships I made and my experience getting to spend every day, in and out, with these amazing teammates and coaches. We were lucky enough to get the opportunity to travel together, share so many laughs and hard times, and grow together throughout our four years. The friendships I made will last a lifetime and I will forever cherish the endless memories I have gained from my experienceÂ
Talk about your post-Temple professional career. What are you doing now and what was your path to your current position?
Immediately after graduation from Temple University, I began my journey in becoming a Speech and Language Therapist. This journey started with a two-year master's program at Monmouth University. I graduated from this program in May of 2018 and went on to begin the 2018-2019 school year working for a company called Cora Services where I am contracted into two Mastery Schools in the Philadelphia area. I am currently working as a Speech and Language Therapist for two schools. I work with children from kindergarten through 12th grade with a variety of disabilities and disorders.Â
How did Temple University, and in specific Temple Women's Soccer prepare you for life after graduation?Â
Being a part of the Temple Soccer Program taught me so many different things that I consistently carry into my career and everyday life. Being a part of the team taught me hard work, patience, teamwork, time management and so much more. Not many people get the opportunity to play a Division I sport and understand the time and commitment that you put in, but it is important to realize how much you can genuinely take away from the experience. All of the time, commitment, and hard work helped prepare me tremendously for my life ahead. In my career, these qualities I have gained from being a part of the Temple University Soccer Program have helped me to succeed and be the best therapist I can be for my students.Â
What accomplishment are you most proud of and why?
The accomplishment I am most proud of is earning my Speech and Language Therapy degree and being able to take the material I was taught and use it to help kids improve their communication skills. There is no better feeling in the world than being able to give a child their voice and help them gain confidence and succeed.
What advice would you give to current student-athletes?
I would tell current student-athletes to make the most of their time at Temple because it flies by quicker than they could ever imagine. When the time comes where you find yourself up on stage receiving your diploma, you will look back and wish you could start the experience all over again. Continuously work hard, learn and grow, but don't always be so focused on what's next, but instead, enjoy the journey you are currently on. You will not get anything like it ever again.Â
